The Kebschull Lab at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Assistant (https://www.kebschull-lab.org/). The Research Assistant will work under the general supervision of the faculty investigator and oversee the day-to-day data collection for the faculty member’s research studies.The Research Assistant will interact with the investigators and collaborators in a research environment. This person will be writing, running, and analyzing standard and non-standard reports.

The Research Assistant will also carry out cutting-edge research in neuroscience, synthetic biology, and connectomics. The Research Assistant will manage animal colonies (mice, birds, etc.), manage lab ordering and supplies, and perform own research within the context of laboratory focus. There is the potential for authorship in scientific papers and participation in conferences.

Our lab develops molecular techniques and neuroanatomical and viral tracing methods to understand vertebrate brain organization and evolution. Current areas of focus are development of next-generation connectomics methods and spatial sequencing as well as their application to mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders and different vertebrate species. Related publications include Kebschull et al. 2016 Neuron, Chen et al. 2019 Cell, Huang et al. 2020 Cell, and Kebschull et al. 2020 Science.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day data collection for research activities.
  • Write, run, and analyze standard and non-standard reports. Clean data and ensure data accuracy.
  • Maintains working knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.
  • Carries out research in the current areas of focus in the lab: Designs experiments, performs a range of assays, including cell culture, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, next-generation sequencing, viral production and processes and analyzes data into figures for scientific presentation and publication.
  • Performs stereotaxic animal surgeries for intracranial viral injections
  • Manages some laboratory equipment and reagents, onboards new lab members, and trains students and other junior personnel in basic laboratory technique, including molecular biology, cell culture, and animals.
  • Participates in weekly laboratory meetings and other ad hoc meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any of the following will be valuable but not required:

  • Experience with viral injections.
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Basic knowledge of coding. Experience in mammalian cell culture technique.
