Position Title Research and Proposal Development Specialist (Hybrid) The Opportunity
The Office of Research & Technology Transfer (RTT) at Colorado School of Mines is building an inclusive culture of excellence in research and innovation – interdisciplinary and collaborative, creating positive societal impact. As we grow our research enterprise, we seek a Research and Proposal Development Specialist who will support researchers from across the University, with an emphasis on helping teams develop collaborative, multi-disciplinary, complex, or strategic proposals.

The Specialist will provide strategic research development support to strengthen proposals, connect collaborators, and empower faculty. The Specialist will advise faculty on grant applications and edit the narrative components of grant proposals to ensure compliance with sponsor guidelines and to improve content, clarity, organization, and visual appeal. They will also provide project management support to teams, removing administrative burden from the PI’s shoulders. In addition, the Specialist will help identify funding opportunities appropriate for Mines faculty, offer trainings to help faculty improve their grant writing skills, and provide back-up support for RTT’s limited submissions and seed funding programs.

This position is eligible for hybrid work and eventually majority remote work within the state of Colorado. The incumbent must be available for occasional travel to campus.

Responsibilities

Proposal Management (70%)
  • In consultation with the Principal Investigator (PI), provides project management for the entire proposal process, including developing workplans and assigning tasks, coordinating team meetings and communications, establishing timelines and tracking progress, and facilitating document sharing and version control
  • Collaborates with appropriate units across campus (e.g., Office of Research Administration, Trefny Innovative Instruction Center) to help faculty prepare compliant and responsive proposals
  • Analyzes complex funding solicitations and past awards to advise the PI on sponsor expectations and help guide responsive concept development
  • Advises faculty members on proposal strategy, including go/no-go decisions, teaming, and messaging
  • Interprets sponsor guidelines and seeks clarification from sponsor when needed
  • Integrates content from multiple authors and ensures unified voice and appearance across all narrative documents
  • Reviews draft proposals to ensure alignment with the solicitation and funder’s research priorities
  • Edits proposals for persuasive language, clarity, and length; applies knowledge of proposal writing best practices (e.g., win themes) to improve narrative
  • Drafts non-scientific language (e.g., management plan)
  • Organizes “red team” reviews of drafts
  • Champions proposal to leadership when seeking cost share or institutional commitments
Research Funding Identification and Analysis (15%)
  • Identifies and promotes funding opportunities relevant to Mines faculty members
  • Maintains and expands knowledge of and familiarity with federal and non-federal funding opportunities to help PIs identify appropriate funding sources
  • Monitors trends in sponsor funding
  • Meets with faculty to understand their research interests, identify potential funding opportunities for them, and advise on pursuit of specific funding opportunities
Additional Research Development Duties (15%)
  • Develops, facilitates, and contributes to workshops and other programming to enable faculty members’ research funding success
  • Supports RTT internal funding and limited submission infrastructure
  • Contributes to implementation of RTT’s action plan in support of institutional goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree AND three (3) years of experience in developing or writing proposals to federal, state, or private funding agencies. Experience must include demonstrated expertise in proposal development.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing and editing skills with strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to juggle competing responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to track deliverables for a large project
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to create successful working relationships with a variety of team members and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience in a scientific environment, such as a university or national laboratory
  • Experience coordinating development of multimillion dollar proposals
  • APMP, PMP, or other relevant certification
  • Knowledge of federal research funding agencies
  • In-depth understanding of proposal preparation and submission processes
  • Knowledge of best practices in proposal management and/or project management
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a service-oriented way and build effective working relationships with a variety of personalities
  • Fluency in relevant technology/platforms (e.g., Word, Excel, Zoom, funding opportunity databases, Google docs) and openness to learning new tools (e.g., Overleaf, Slack) to best serve faculty
  • Ability to problem solve and independently make decisions in a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to understand engineering and/or scientific research programs, gained through experience and/or training

Pay Range

$56,400-$64,900

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
