Colgate University’s entrepreneurship and innovation programs offer students—as well as faculty, staff, and community members—a host of opportunities to bring a concept to reality, to learn by doing, to innovate and explore, to solve problems, to take risks and grow in new ways.

This is an exciting time for entrepreneurship and innovation at Colgate, as these areas are positioned centrally within Colgate’s newly-developing Middle Campus Initiative for Arts, Creativity, and Innovation. This initiative envisions a cross-departmental collaborative approach between academic and co-curricular areas, as well as the co-location of creative departments into new and revitalized spaces on campus. The University is building on the strengths and successes through its signature Thought Into Action ( TIA ) program while developing new programs that connect entrepreneurship and innovation with the arts, faculty research, and making across the campus, and more.

Currently consisting of one full-time director, a part-time liaison to the president’s office, and a part-time alumni director, the Entrepreneurship and Innovation team at Colgate is poised to take new shape. In addition to hiring the full-time Entrepreneur in Residence, a search for a full-time assistant director is underway. The entrepreneurial ecosystem at Colgate is dynamic and growing. Over the coming years, Colgate will expand on current entrepreneurship and innovation offerings, launch new co-curricular programs, and develop new collaboration opportunities with campus partners. E & I team members will play a pivotal role in this exciting growth and development, shaping the way that entrepreneurship and innovation look at Colgate. Accountabilities
The Entrepreneur in Residence will be a seasoned entrepreneur and mentor who creates and delivers experiential programs for aspiring student entrepreneurs. Reporting to the Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programs, this new role is a critical part of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation team, focused on supporting existing programs like the TIA Incubator and Summer Accelerator, launching new programs under the TIA umbrella, and advising Colgate entrepreneurs broadly.

The Entrepreneur in Residence position requires in its holder firsthand experience as an entrepreneur, a background in mentoring and advising entrepreneurs, expertise in leading hands-on programs for aspiring entrepreneurs, and a familiarity with entrepreneurship and innovation networks and frameworks.

The Entrepreneur in Residence is a full-time, on-campus role. The role will work primarily with student participants, as well as with alumni and parent volunteers, recent alumni entrepreneurs, staff, faculty, and local community members.

Specific Accountabilities include:
Program Design, Implementation, and Execution
  • Take a lead role in the planning, implementation, and assessment of the TIA Incubator, Summer Accelerator, and new programs under the TIA umbrella.
  • Oversee content development for TIA programs, frequently delivering content and managing external speakers.
  • Design and oversee assessments to measure student learning in programs.
Entrepreneurial Advising and Engagement
  • Serve as the primary advisor for students participating in TIA programs, advising students and supporting their entrepreneurial development. Work with students to identify their goals and plan of approach, assist to introduce new innovative frameworks, and assist students to problem-solve through challenges.
  • Support current/aspiring entrepreneurs who are not involved in TIA programs. Advise them on their entrepreneurial journeys and direct them to programs and resources.
  • Manage program participants’ preparation for Entrepreneur Weekend, pitch nights, and other programs.
Program Administration
  • Oversee strategy and execution for Entrepreneur Weekend, working with director on overall strategy and assistant director on logistics.
  • Serve on application review panels for TIA programs; recommend and select additional review group members.
  • Participate in information sessions and other programs to recruit participants.
Mentor and Advisor Management
  • Take a lead role in selecting, training, engaging, and assessing mentors and advisors. Design and facilitate training and assessment.
  • Engage regularly with mentors and advisors to monitor the progress of student participants, provide subject matter support, and solicit mentor input and assistance.
Regional Outreach
  • Engage with local entrepreneurs and organizations that are part of the wider entrepreneurial ecosystem in Madison County and Central New York.
  • Build relationships with peers at other schools, including New York Six institutions.
Divisional and University Engagement
  • Contribute to programs within the University in support of the mission of student learning.
Professional Experience/ Qualifications
  • Experience as a founder or leadership team member of an early-stage business, nonprofit, or other venture.
  • Experience advising aspiring and first-time entrepreneurs.
  • Familiarity and expertise with entrepreneurial frameworks (e.g., design thinking, lean startup).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • Strong support for diversity, equity, and inclusion, desire to make an impact in those areas, and documented efforts in ongoing learning related to DE&I.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising college-aged students.
  • Experience structuring programs to prioritize student learning and development. Ability to apply knowledge of best practices in program design and management, leading to beneficial student outcomes.
  • Experience with assessment and data analysis.
  • Experience managing volunteers.
