Salary and Benefits

The salary range will be from $80,000 - $93,000 per year.

This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU, and serves at the pleasure of the President.

The CSU enjoys a generous benefits program with employer paid life insurance ($100,000), as well as health, dental, and vision insurance with the monthly premium largely paid by the CSU. Additionally, we offer a broad range of other benefits which includes dependent and health care reimbursement accounts, tuition fee waiver, 401k, 457 and 403(b) plans.

The CSU belongs to the CalPERS retirement plan in which medical and dental insurance continues in qualified retirement.

The CSU has 14 paid holidays and the position earns 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year.

About the Position

Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic Advising & Career Education (AACE), the Director of Career Education and Internships strategically leads career and internship services operations for current CSUEB students and alumni. These operations include, but are not limited to, career development, recruitment services, event planning, and internship programs. This individual collaborates within and across divisions and with community stakeholders to develop, implement and assess effective, research-based and equitable-minded career education and internship programs. In addition, the Director will oversee career development and employment technology platforms to improve service delivery and will conduct ongoing assessment of student and employer satisfaction, institutional learning outcomes and job placements.

The Director of Career Education and Internships will expand career services to include alumni programming as well as cultivate and sustain current campus and community partnerships. The individual will coordinate timely communications and opportunities, such as career and internships workshops and fairs, to ensure effective career education and internship services.

Responsibilities

Administrative Management & Direction
  • Develops strategic goals for the career education and development that support and enhance the strategic goals for Academic Affairs, Alumni Association, and the University
  • Research and implement evidence-based best practices in career services and internships
  • Dramatically scale the number of high-quality, academic and paid internships provided to CSUEB students, increasing the number of paid internships opportunities
  • Identifies and determines causes of problems or gaps in career education business processes; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices; initiates and implements plans to solve problems
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with members of the University community; serve as the leader and primary point of campus contact for career services and internships
  • Provide consultation to the campus community on career education, internships, and career development issues
  • Develops and maintains online career and internship databases to increase job listings and campus interviewing opportunities for students, alumni, and employers
  • Identifies, develops, and maintains technology to maximize the delivery of career education and internship services
  • Interprets and ensures compliance to federal, state, and local regularities, policies, and mandates
  • Oversee the processes to recruit, screen, hire, retain, evaluate and train career and internship staff in AACE, with input from the Executive Director of AACE
  • Supervise career education and internship staff; assign and evaluate tasks to meet unit goals
  • With input from the Executive Director of AACE, determine and assess annual priorities to enhance CSUEB career education and internship programs for students and alumni
Relationship Development
  • Establish, expand and sustain collaborative relationships with CSUEB and external constituencies, especially colleges, Student Life and Leadership, Alumni Services, and employers
  • Develop and sustain employer relationships that lead to opportunities to provide internship and employment opportunities for CSUEB students and alumni
  • Organize and manage special events such as career/internship workshops, career/internship fairs or through networking events with employer sponsors
  • Conduct ongoing assessment and tracking of student and employer satisfaction, institutional learning outcomes as well as internships and job placements
Meetings and Professional Development Activities
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director of AACE and follow-up on action items and oversee special projects
  • Serve on appropriate University committees, representing the interests of AACE and its constituents
  • Participate in and represent AACE at CSU Career Services Directors' meetings
  • Attend workshops and conferences to keep abreast of new developments in issues addressing career education, internships and alumni services
  • Participate in on and off campus professional development programs and activities
Other duties as assigned
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of AACE in collaboration with other University units to develop special programs to assist students to obtain co-curricular experiences that enhance their employability and career opportunities
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated management experience and skills in the development, implementation and assessment of career and internship support programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theory, practices, technology, and trends in student services, internships, and career counseling.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, experience with, and ability to serve diverse student, faculty, staff, and community populations.
  • Knowledge of the labor market, employment, and salary trends.
  • Thorough understanding of the special demands working in a diverse academic environment with the demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, University administration, faculty, the community, alumni, and employers.
  • Ability to manage and lead a creative staff and promote team effort.
  • Ability to develop funding through employer networking and revenue generating programs.
  • Demonstrated marketing capabilities in delivering career education services to students, alumni, employers, faculty, departments, and colleges.
  • Knowledge of administration, organizational management, personnel management, and career development.
  • Knowledge of career and internship database management and student record systems.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of CalStateS4, EAB Navigate, Handshake, and the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA).
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in counseling, psychology, other behavioral science, higher education administration, student development, career counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive management experience, supervising, coaching and mentoring a diverse team, preferably in a student academic and/or career support programs in higher education.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • Understanding of university organizational structure, namely at CSUEB.
  • Understanding of the campus policies and procedures relevant to the position.
  • Experience working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
Condition(s) of Employment
