Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Title: Chemistry Lab Technician (Casual)
Department: Department of Physical Sciences
Reports to: Director of Chemistry Laboratories and Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO)
Status: Part-Time, Non-Benefit Eligible


Position Summary: Supply and manage chemicals and equipment necessary to operate lab classes taught in the Department of Physical Sciences.


Essential Job Responsibilities:
1. Lab Equipment and Chemical Preparation:
a. Prepare reagents, experimental equipment and supplies for the department’s teaching lab multi-section courses offered every semester and during the summer.
b. Supervise student workers assigned to maintain the stockroom areas and prepare reagents, e xperimental equipment and supplies.

2. Stockroom Management: Day-to-day upkeep of chemical inventories, SDS files and databases.

3. Assist in the upkeep or disposal of laboratory equipment, balances and instruments.

4. Assist faculty and research students in locating equipment/supplies from storage, ordering equipment/chemicals/supplies, and setting up equipment.

Other Functions:

1. Other lab duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:



Education: Bachelors degree in Chemistry or a related field required
Experience: 2-5 years laboratory or chemical stockroom experience
Specific Skills: working independently, organizational, customer service, computer and internet knowledge
Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications: Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook competence. Knowledge of chemical laboratory techniques and solution preparation as well as a broad knowledge of chemical laboratory equipment. Hazardous waste management, knowledge of laboratory safety standards, and OSHA and EPA laboratory regulations and guidelines with respect to chemical storage and hazardous waste management. Annual OSHA HAZWOPER certification, CPR, and AED training provided upon hire.
Physical Requirements: Moving gas cylinders and cryogen containers; occasional lifting of 50 lb. containers;
Travel (If applicable): N/A
Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable): Supervise, schedule and document the work of lab student workers.
Working Conditions: Time spent in chemistry laboratories and a stockroom environment. Computer keyboarding; handling chemicals on a daily basis; using goggles and appropriate PPE.
