Job Description
Thomas Nelson Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Director of Library Services is a 12-month administrative faculty position reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. This position plans, coordinates, and oversees the daily operations of Library and Tutoring Services on both the Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses and supervises the college E-campus Director. This position is responsible for managing and providing public services, including circulation, course reserves and student obligations, and for supervising and evaluating library and tutorial staff. The Director is responsible for developing and managing the library and tutoring budgets and leads the professional librarians’ team in matters of reference and instruction, collection development, and library policy and procedures. The Director serves as a liaison with faculty, staff and the community regarding library services and use of facilities and materials. The Director works closely with senior administration, deans, and faculty to support and improve student learning and student success.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervise, evaluate, and schedule all library personnel; assign duties and responsibilities; plan staff development activities; conduct periodic formal evaluation of all part-time and full-time staff. Leads team of professional librarians managing areas of collection development, reference and research, acquisitions and cataloging, statistics and assessment, interlibrary loan, instruction and information literacy, electronic resource access; administration of library integrated system (ALMA). Supervise and evaluate the college e-Campus (Canvas) Director.
  • Ensure that library and tutoring programs and services are accessible to all students at all physical locations and online.
  • Manage library and tutoring budgets.
  • Provide leadership for integration of library services in academic programs.
  • Provide reference, circulation, instruction, and outreach services to TNCC students, faculty, and staff.
  • Represent the library at the college, system, regional, and state-wide level; act as liaison to the VCCS System Office.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Systems (or equivalent) from an American Library Associate (ALA) accredited institution. Administrative experience and at least two years’ supervisory experience, to include staff scheduling, employee development and evaluation.

Knowledge

  • Extensive knowledge of complex library services is essential to perform the duties of this position.

  • Knowledge of and experience using emerging technologies in the academic library. environment and demonstrated ability to apply emerging technologies to library services and instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budget, equipment, and other institutional resources. Independent decision-making skills related to effectiveness of the library processes.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).

Ability to

  • Work in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment.
  • Interpret and apply college policies and procedures.
  • Work effectively with diverse constituencies including students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic reference and research skills using both print and electronic resources, ability to organize detailed work, maintain accurate records and experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience managing library circulation and reserves processes.
  • Experience with the Ex Libris-Alma integrated library system.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the community college mission and philosophy.
