The Department of Teacher Education and Foundations (TEF) within the College of Education at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education (Elementary Mathematics) to begin August 2022. The Department is seeking candidates who have a passion for taking leadership roles in developing new innovative programs, engaging in and promoting research in mathematics education, and supporting University, College of Education, and Teacher Education & Foundations Department strategic goals, which include student success and partnerships with the community to enhance the social, economic, and cultural conditions of the region and beyond.

JOB SUMMARY

Candidates must have knowledge, skills and interest in elementary mathematics education teaching, research, and professional development. Candidates are expected to teach mathematics education courses for elementary teacher candidates and graduate students. Candidates are expected to meet the requirements for excellence in teaching, active scholarly and professional work, and service to the University and community.

The successful candidate is expected to:
  • Design and teach mathematics education courses at the credential and graduate levels that emphasize high impact instructional strategies and current teaching and learning theories in mathematics education
  • Work with credential and graduate students within a K-12 school setting
  • Participate in committee assignments at the department, college, and university levels
  • Supervise student teachers
  • Engage in research/publication and/or creative activities
  • Advise, coach and mentor credential and graduate students
  • Participate in student recruitment to the credential and graduate programs

Qualified candidates must demonstrate active involvement and excellence in teaching and mentoring/supervising a diverse population of students, working collaboratively and productively with faculty, staff and administrators within and across programs, departments, and colleges at the university. Candidates are also expected to be actively engaged with the community (e.g., schools and school districts, county office of education, professional organizations, etc.).

In addition, new faculty are encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the University's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes: a) student success; b) faculty and staff success; c) stewarding resources; d) community engagement and partnerships; and e) enhancing the campus identity. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctorate degree in education with an emphasis in mathematics education or related fields such as STEM Education (Degree in hand by time of appointment)
  • Mathematics teaching experience at elementary level or experience with working with preservice/in-service elementary teachers in mathematics
  • Demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in teaching, research, and service to the university and to the profession
  • Demonstrated content knowledge in mathematics (e.g., A bachelor's degree in mathematics, or equivalent)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidate with the following qualifications:
    • A doctorate degree with an emphasis in elementary education
    • An elementary teaching credential/license or equivalent experience in teacher preparation.
    • Teaching mathematics at the elementary level for a minimum of three years
    • Research/publications and/or creative activities in the areas of elementary mathematics education
    • Supervision of student teachers during their fieldwork
    • Graduate or credential course teaching experience (or equivalent)
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Demonstrated knowledge/ability to integrate mathematics with other STEM subjects and across the elementary curriculum
    • Development of new and innovative courses for credential and graduate programs
    • Demonstrated ability to provide academic and career advising for students
    • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology and teach courses online
    • Demonstrated interest and potential to collaborate with school and /school district
    • Interest in leadership in mathematics/STEM education at the local, state, or national levels
    • Demonstrated ability/potential to secure external funds for research/projects
    • Demonstrated ability/potential to collaborate with professional colleagues

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
