ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MICROBIOLOGY

Position description: The Department of Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position (9 month).  We are looking for a faculty colleague with an innovative mindset to develop a research program that uses systems or synthetic microbiology approaches to advance our understanding of modern agriculture. We are especially interested in candidates developing independent research programs in

  1. Engineering microbial cells or communities to enhance agriculture and food production, or
  2. Understanding the role of microbe-insect or microbe-insect-plant interactions in pollination or pest control.

The successful candidate will develop a strong extramurally funded research program and contribute to academic governance through service to the department, college, university, and to their scientific discipline. Contribution to the undergraduate and graduate teaching mission is expected. Applications from candidates with an interest in developing innovative teaching methods and contributing to developing courses/ programs in microbial biotechnology to enhance local scientific talent and outreach to agricultural industries in the area are welcomed.

In addition to well-equipped departmental laboratory space, core biology and synthesis research facilities, the newly developed Peltier Agricultural Products Development Center, and a high-powered computing cluster, the successful candidate will have access to the Dalrymple BSL3 research greenhouses, agricultural plots, the NDSU Beef Cattle Research Complex, the Advanced Imaging & Microscopy Laboratory, and the NDSU Electron Microscopy Center, as well as a collaborative network of scientists, extension personnel, commodity groups, and a supportive agricultural community.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences with demonstrated expertise in Microbiological Sciences

Relevant postdoctoral research experience

Evidence of recent research productivity

Demonstrated commitment to teaching,

Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate effectively with a diversity of colleagues and

students, and

Effective written and oral communication skills.

 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

A strong publication record,

Evidence of productivity in microbiology research with agricultural application or related areas, Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding

Evidence of effective and innovative teaching.
