Summary:

VCU Massey Cancer Center (MCC) will serve as a comprehensive center of excellence in cancer research, prevention and control, patient care and education. The overarching goal of the administrative team is to provide exceptional administrative leadership, management, and fiscal oversight for the activities of MCC to achieve the following strategic goals and mission of the center:

  1. Leverage health system/university assets to address social determinants of health
  2. Increase interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and interprofessional education, scholarship and practice
    among arts, humanities and sciences
  3. Integrate Academic, Research, and Clinical Missions to advance human health through interprofessional
    education and collaborative practice


Typical Duties

The purpose of this position is to provide expert writing and editing support as well as proposal development guidance to Massey Cancer Center faculty members and staff who are developing:
  • NIH and other extramural, peer-reviewing agency sponsored grant applications (eg, new and competing renewal applications), notably for large multi-institutional, multi-project, and multi-investigator initiatives
  • Scientific manuscripts resulting from MCC-sponsored or high priority research
Typical Education and Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit, and proofread medical and scientific documents.
  • Knowledge of NIH grant funding mechanisms, requirements, and submission platform (ERA Commons – SF424) and demonstrated track record in assisting in the development of successful proposals
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Word; proficient with Microsoft Excel and Power Point and with Adobe Acrobat.
  • General familiarity with how research with human subjects is regulated.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and interpersonal skills that facilitate effective interactions within cross-functional teams and with external customers.
  • Ability to identify issues and generate solutions or request appropriate intervention by management.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, both oral and written.
  • Basic understanding of medical and scientific terminology, especially as it relates to biomedical basic and clinical research.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast paced, demanding environment and adapt to changing priorities without supervision.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Typical Licensure
  • Bachelor's degree in a science or health profession.
  • At least five years of experience with technical, scientific, or medical grant writing in an academic medical environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a science or health profession.
  • Oncology experience.
  • Proficient with reference management software (EndNote preferred)
