University of Birmingham Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts and Law

Having been founded as the first civic university in the UK, the University of Birmingham is committed to making a positive economic, social, and cultural contribution through our education and research. We serve our diverse and vibrant region in many ways, including through a partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company, a convening role with major arts organisations in the City, addressing sustainability challenges at the Tyseley Energy Park, working closely with local NHS partners to establish the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus, and establishing the non-selective University of Birmingham School.

The University of Birmingham offers one of the broadest range of programmes of all UK universities, teaching 38,000 students and employing 8,500 staff. We are a highly diverse community: our staff and students come from Birmingham and the West Midlands, across the UK, and from around the world. We have recently opened a major new campus in Dubai.

Our aspiration over the next decade is to establish Birmingham in the top 50 of the world’s leading universities. Our Birmingham 2030 Strategic Framework has been developed with and approved by the University Council and sets out how we will pursue this challenging and exciting ambition.

Notwithstanding the challenges facing the Arts and Humanities globally, the University of Birmingham is committed to investing in the Arts and Law, and to supporting innovation and new developments in research and education.

At this time of transition and opportunity, we are seeking to appoint a Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) and Head of the College of Arts and Law with the leadership skills to champion the life and work of the College, ensuring that its programmes of research and education remain distinctive and highly valued. Comprising the Schools of English, Drama and Creative Studies; History and Cultures; Language, Cultures, Art History and Music; Philosophy, Theology and Religion and the Birmingham Law School, as well as The Shakespeare institute and The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, the College is an intellectually dynamic and diverse community of scholars.

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, and a member of the University Executive Board, the incoming PVC and Head of College will bring an outstanding reputation in research and teaching as well as proven leadership and management credentials developed in a large and complex organisation. They will have a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the humanities, have exceptional communication skills, be able to demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively, and possess the skills to shape the College’s vision and enhance its performance.
