Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong (ranked 1st most international university in the world by Times Higher Education in 2022) is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in teaching and research, and has been at the international forefront of academic scholarship for many years. Applications are invited for appointment as Publisher in the Hong Kong University Press (Ref.: 511943) from as soon as possible, initially on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.

Since its establishment in 1956, the Hong Kong University Press (HKUP) has grown from a small publisher to one that releases between 30 and 50 new titles a year, with active lists in arts and humanities, law, education, architecture and health sciences. The Press has aggressively built its e-books portfolio, including partnerships with Oxford Scholarship Online, Project Muse, JSTOR, and others in Asia and worldwide. Reporting to the Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), and working with the HKUP Editorial Board, the Publisher will provide oversight and management of the Press to achieve its vision and mission in supporting the University’s strategic goals. He/She will take ownership of the Press’s publishing and global branding strategies; provide leadership in staff management, financial planning and digital development; and be responsible for overseeing the acquisitions, editorial, production and distribution processes. The successful candidate should possess at least 10 years of relevant experience in scholarly publishing, as well as substantial managerial experience, knowledge of the publishing process and strong international network in academic publishing.  Good command of project and financial management in publishing is essential. A postgraduate degree in a relevant academic discipline is desirable.  A high degree of proficiency in English is essential while knowledge of Chinese and Asian experience would be beneficial.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
