The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Position Description
The Johns Hopkins MA in Film and Media Program in the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences invites applications for Program Director, a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month faculty position. We are seeking a candidate with a proven track record of experience in the film and media industry. The Program Director is a thought-leader and visionary, setting the overarching goals and strategies for the program. S/he/they ensures the program’s creative culture, uncompromising support of students, and inclusivity and relevance to the communities it serves.
The MA in Film and Media provides an in-depth curriculum designed to develop the skill sets required to succeed in the film, television, and media industries. Students are exposed to the latest technology, taught the most current financial and distribution strategies, and trained in advanced narrative techniques. This innovative program brings the industry to Baltimore, as our students grow their professional network while creating a two-way bridge between the local burgeoning film scene and the industry hubs in Los Angeles, New York and abroad. The program is housed in the JHU/MICA Film Centre which is home to the JHU Centre for Visual Arts, The Impact Hub , The Center for Neighborhoods, and The Baltimore Jewelry Center . The Centre is in Baltimore's Station North Arts and Entertainment District.
Internally at the Film Centre, the Program Director works collaboratively with the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Film and Media Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and the Director of the MICA Filmmaking MFA Program. The Program Director also works in cooperation with the Director of the Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund to establish strategies for program support. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Advanced Academic Program in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, with assistance in curricular oversight from a Program Chair.
Responsibilities
The Program Director will have the following program teaching and administrative responsibilities:
- Teaching 3 courses per year on site at the Film Centre in
Baltimore;
- Engaging and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in the
learning process, responding to student questions;
- Providing innovative leadership for curriculum design and new
course development to ensure the growth and delivery of quality
programs;
- Reviewing applications and making admission decisions;
- Scheduling courses and workshops throughout a full calendar
year;
- Providing academic advising to students;
- Collaborating with AAP Marketing and Communications on
marketing and outreach activities (e.g., open houses, recruitment
fairs, materials development, orientation);
- Service to the School/University (e.g. committees, open houses,
commencement, etc.);
- Supervising, evaluating and hiring adjunct and full-time
faculty;
- Manage operational budget.
- Visionary and creative thinker with the capacity to imagine,
develop, and execute innovative programming;
- Successful candidates will have a minimum of 3 years
professional experience in the film and media industry or related
industries with additional experience managing programs that
prioritize artists, diversity, and inclusivity;
- S/he/they will hold a graduate degree in film and media, art
history, studio art, curatorial studies, or other related academic
study;
- Experience and respected profile in the national and
international film and media community with a network of artists
and colleagues;
- Excellent working relationships with artists, professional
counterparts, collectors, and donors;
- Demonstrated ability to work and effectively interface with
staff, instructors, colleagues, and the public;
- A collaborative team player with excellent verbal and written
communication skills as well as public speaking acumen.
- Master’s degree in Film and Media or in a relevant field;
- 5 or more years of higher education teaching experience online
and/or at the graduate level;
- 3 or more years of experience at the Associate Director level,
or equivalent administrative experience;
- 3-5 years of related professional work experience outside of
academia within the film and media field;
- The ability to teach a wide variety of courses in the film and
media field;
- Demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and
innovation in curriculum design.
- Terminal degree in a relevant field;
- 6 or more years of higher education teaching experience online
and/or at the graduate level;
- 5 or more years of related professional work experience outside
of academia within the film and media industry;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with
competing demands and multiple deadlines;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Experience managing a degree or certificate program.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
