Summary:

The Academic Computing Specialist (Student Success Information Systems) is the subject matter expert who provides high-quality information system solutions for Buena Vista University faculty, staff, and students. This includes maintaining knowledge of trends with similar solutions in higher education and working with technical and non-technical staff to develop and deliver visionary services for BVU students.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Academic Computing Specialist (SSIS) is responsible for the architecture and functioning of IS solutions for departments directly involved with student success. Direct technical responsibilities include designing, implementing, and supporting secure systems. Administrative responsibilities include project management and leadership of virtual teams. Overall responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Supports the student services department staff with the programming of IS systems and software for all aspects of records and data.
  • Maintains ongoing knowledge of current and future federal and state regulations and guidelines. Assists in the compiling and preparation of data according to State and Federal regulations, policies and guidelines, application processing, and eligibility requirements.
  • Leads the discovery, feasibility analysis, and prototyping of future-state technical tools, systems, software, architecture, and protocols for incorporation into the University’s technical architecture.
  • Serves as a top technical expert in one or more highly specialized areas of applications systems analysis and programming
  • Engages with internal and external stakeholders to determine a visionary strategy for systems involving departments and functions focusing on or related to student success. Collects, analyzes, and translates business requirements into specifications, workflows, user stories, and acceptance criteria. Leads requirements analysis and verification, ensuring that specifications and user stories are complete, consistent, concise, comprehensible, traceable, feasible, unambiguous, and verifiable.
  • Manages the project life cycle including scheduling and facilitating meetings, tracking deliverables, facilitating deconfliction and escalating issues as required, and ensuring timely completion of projects. Ensures that developed solutions meet user needs by coordinating user acceptance testing and leads project closeout meetings and ensures that lessons learned are incorporated into future projects.
  • Designs and implements automated and manual test procedures to ensure that all software enhancements meet or exceed functional design specifications as well as security and performance standards.
  • Manages data environment and ensures data reliability, integrity, quality, and security in support of a wide range of initiatives.
  • Thoroughly documents plans, designs, architecture, and changes relating to areas of responsibility and works with others to ensure complete documentation as needed. Develops user-focused documentation and training material to support operations.
  • Trains technical and non-technical staff, faculty, and students as appropriate.
  • Ensures user interface-level security to protect against unauthorized access and establish systems to prevent malicious activity. Acts as information security advisor for technical and non-technical staff.
  • Assist with troubleshooting code and identifying resolution of program errors or bugs. Participates in code review with other ITSS staff.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures in accordance with defined frameworks and best practices. Ensures institutional standards, policies, and procedures are met and provides justification for deviations.
  • Actively engages in a continued program of professional development. Researches area of expertise and participates in pertinent national groups and organizations. Advises other staff and leadership on trends in area of expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Two-year degree in Information Systems or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of experience with complex SQL databases, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Four years of experience with JavaScript, PHP, or similar scripting languages.
  • Four years of experience supporting CRM systems.
  • Four years of experience with process automation and continuous integration in conjunction with secure coding practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain high-quality documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to seek out and provide added value to others.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of EAI / SOA design patterns and best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OWASP and other cyber security frameworks
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the telling of visual stories.
  • Interest in and ability to interact professionally and effectively across all levels of an organization.
  • Interest in and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks and work independently with little supervision.
  • Interest in and ability to perform job duties with the utmost integrity and adherence to institutional policy.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements including PII and FERPA regulations and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of web service/microservice (WebAPI, JSON) architectures.
