Assistant Professor, TESOL (General) (Tenure Track)

Educational Studies Department

Rhode Island College

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Programs at Rhode Island College invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor, TESOL (General). This is a full-time, academic year, continuing tenure track position.

This position is specifically targeted to a candidate who can work as part of a collaborative team to prepare teacher candidates of emergent bilinguals through coursework that links theory and practice, field experiences in diverse communities, and engagement in advocacy. Other responsibilities include contributing to robust partnership initiatives between the TESOL program and PK-12 districts, advising graduate students, collaborating with TESOL colleagues to maintain and grow the program and conducting scholarly research in the field of ESL and/or bilingual education.

Founded in the mid-1970s and currently serving communities in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, the Teaching English as a Second Language Program at RIC prepares teachers and teacher candidates to work with youth and adults with emerging English proficiency. The program is tied to the communities it serves, through district-college partnerships and initiatives, participation in statewide organizations, and ongoing relationships with community groups.

Established in 1854, Rhode Island College is a comprehensive mid-size institution of approximately 6,400 students. The 180-acre campus is located in beautiful, historic Providence, Rhode Island’s capital, with proximity to the academic and cultural resources of Boston and New York City.

Required qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in TESOL, Bilingual Education, or related field. ABD candidates will be considered.
  • At least three years U.S. teaching experience in PK-12 TESOL or Bilingual Education settings.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of best practices in TESOL and Bilingual Education including PK-12 and Adult settings; federal and state regulations for Multilingual Learner (MLL) education and their impact on MLL education; knowledge of applied linguistics and second language acquisition theories related to teaching and learning in TESOL and bilingual settings; and appropriate methods and assessment for MLLs.
  • Strong understanding of and connection to transnational, bilingual, and/or historically marginalized communities in the US.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish productive working relationships with colleagues and partner schools
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly research in the field

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficiency in a language other than English, with preference for languages spoken by bilingual communities in RI.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the postsecondary level, with a focus on preparing teachers of emergent bilinguals for PK-12 settings.
  • Experience advocating for emergent bilinguals at the community, district, or statewide level.
