Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology. This is a full-time appointment beginning July 1, 2022. Please visit this web page to learn more about Hollins; its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice; faculty development; the university’s students; and the Roanoke Valley.

Position & Qualifications

Biology is one of the university’s most popular undergraduate majors, and the department offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees. The department is seeking applicants with expertise and teaching experience at the cellular and molecular level. The position carries six courses per academic year, and this course load can be spread out across a fall semester, January term, and spring semester. Each laboratory section of a course will count as half a course. The successful candidate will teach the lecture and laboratory sections for Molecular and Cell Biology (one of three required courses for the biology major) each year. In addition, this person will offer an upper-level course in genetics with one or two laboratory sections at least once during their appointment. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop upper-level cellular or molecular courses in their area of interest. Many of the departmental faculty regularly make interdisciplinary contributions across campus, offering courses that are cross-listed with other departments, especially within the sciences. Flexibility in the teaching responsibilities of this position would also allow the successful candidate to contribute to the university’s general education curriculum via development of a non-majors course.

Candidates must have a master’s degree or Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology or a related field (ABD candidates will also be considered) by July 1, 2022, a record of relevant teaching experience and success at the collegiate level, and a clear understanding of and strong commitment to teaching excellence and innovation within a small liberal arts institution.
