Position Purpose: Under general supervision, perform a variety of skilled maintenance, repair, alteration, and building construction tasks related to the college buildings and equipment within a broad framework of standard policies and procedures.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Inspect buildings, electrical systems, grounds, and equipment to ensure safe, well-maintained conditions; identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
  • Supervises work order process and ensures tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting and repairs; replace light bulbs, ballasts and fuses.
  • Identify and perform basic service and repair on plumbing fixtures; open clogged lines and drains.
  • Identify and assist carpentry and repair work.
  • Operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools including saws, routers, drills, sanders, planers, drill presses, and various hand tools.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment; recommend tool supplies and equipment for purchase.
  • Perform a variety of locksmith duties; install, repair, and replace locks on doors.
  • Install or replace plugs, switches, and outlets.
  • Assist with snow removal.
  • Perform periodic maintenance of lawn equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist with moving, loading, unloading, and storing supplies, furniture, and equipment.
  • Responds to 24-hour emergency calls. Troubleshoots and responds to after-hour issues as needed regarding the operational aspects of the facilities such as HVAC issues, fire alarm malfunctions, electrical outages, water leaks, etc.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Complies with all company, safety, and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
  • Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training, and hazard assessments.
  • Applies all applicable OSHA and related local safety requirements to all assigned work.
  • Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
  • Willingness to work in multiple areas within the Facilities/Grounds department.
  • Maintain clean and orderly conditions in all working areas for purpose of observing all safety practices and regulations.
  • Monitors contract work for the purposes of ensuring contract terms are fulfilled and work standards are met.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, recommendations, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Essential Job Requirements:

    Education:
    • Job-related experience within a specialized field is required. Targeted job-related education that meets organization prerequisite requirements.
    Experience:
    • 5+ years’ experience.
    Skills:
    • Strategic thinking and orientation with the ability to identify and solve problems.
    • The ability to deal with multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and the flexibility to deal with changing needs.
    • Demonstrated ability to set and achieve or exceed goals and the ability to consistently meet deadlines.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents; the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external audiences.
    • Customer-service focused.
    • Willingness to work evenings and weekends for University-sanctioned events.
    • Ability to maintain a positive attitude.
    • Knowledge of and proficiency in all OSHA and local requirements related to all assigned work.
    • The ability to work independently and as a member of the George Williams College team.
    • Strong enthusiasm, motivation, and drive.
    Special Requirements:
    • Valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
    Physical Requirements:
    • The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury.
    • Must maneuver around campus and the hilly terrain with ease.
