Visiting Assistant Professor in Environmental and Indigenous Justice, Environmental Studies

The University of Montana Environmental Studies Program invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Environmental and Indigenous Justice . This position will begin August 2022, and the minimum teaching load is two (2) courses per academic semester. EVST is interdisciplinary and known nationally for its engagement-oriented Master of Science (MS) graduate program, now in its 52nd year. EVST initiated an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1999, and added a Bachelor of Sciences (BS) in Sustainability Science and Practice in 2020. We seek a creative thinker and inspiring teacher with interdisciplinary training in the humanities to add depth to our Environmental Justice, Indigenous Knowledge and Environmental Sustainability, and/or Thought and Writing focus areas of study. Relevant areas of academic expertise include but are not limited to environmental and climate justice, Indigenous environmentalism, global justice movements, food justice/sovereignty, human rights, and other related areas.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, Faculty, Academic Year (10 months) and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $60,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications
  • Possess a doctorate by August 1, 2022 in interdisciplinary studies, humanities, or related humanistic subdisciplines, such as American Studies, Native American Studies, Philosophy/Ethics, History, Cultural Anthropology, Environmental Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Latin American Studies, Chican@ Studies, Religious Studies, and Women and Gender Studies
  • Demonstrate evidence of or potential for teaching and research excellence
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to teach, supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Interest in curriculum development
  • Commitment to recruiting and supporting diverse groups of students
  • Competitive candidates will demonstrate capacity to develop or sustain partnerships with Indigenous communities.
