The College of Health Sciences offers pre-professional, professional, and research-focused degrees through its five academic departments: Biomedical Sciences, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Health Informatics & Administration, Kinesiology, and Rehabilitation Sciences & Technology. The College of Health Sciences with the College of Nursing, the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, and the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health have formed Partners for Health, a research and inter-professional collaborative.
The UWM Department of Kinesiology engages in the generation, dissemination, integration, and application of knowledge specific to human movement. Academic programs within the department include BS Kinesiology, MS Kinesiology, PhD Kinesiology, and accelerated BS Kinesiology-MS Athletic Training degrees. The department partners with other academic units on campus to offer Certificates in Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches and Applied Gerontology at the undergraduate level and Interprofessional Public and Population Health at the graduate level.
Sport & Recreation offers 80+ courses (470+ sections a year) to enhance students’ academic work by increasing physical activity, providing creative outlets, and reducing stress. 60+ professional instructors teach wellness, fitness, outdoor adventure, sports, creative/cooking, and more at on-campus & off campus locations. Students register for courses in PAWS & earn general elective credit(s).

Job Summary
This 12-month, non-tenure Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology will devote approximately half-time to teaching courses in the Kinesiology academic programs, and approximately half-time serving as the director of the Department of Kinesiology Physical Activity and Well-being Courses (currently known as Sport & Recreation).

For teaching in the Department of Kinesiology academic programs, the applicant will teach undergraduate courses in their areas of expertise. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, exercise testing, and exercise prescription. Experiences teaching face-to-face and online classes; delivering laboratory-based, experiential learning classes; internship supervision; and creating inclusive learning environments for a diverse student body are desirable. On occasion, the applicant may teach graduate courses in their area of expertise.

For directing the Department of Kinesiology Physical Activity and Well-being Courses, the applicant will be responsible for providing leadership to and oversight of a vibrant, high-enrolling collection of physical activity and well-being for-credit course offerings that serve students across campus. The applicant will be responsible for course selection/development; instructor hiring, training, and supervision (and completion of evaluations); coordination of marketing, enrollment, and delivery of academic for-credit classes; and collaborating with University Recreation, Registrar's Office, and off-campus facilities to manage space assignments.

For service to UWM and the profession, the applicant will work collaboratively within and outside of the Department, College, and Campus. UWM service includes attending Department and College meetings, as well as serving on college and campus committees. Participation in professional service, such as maintenance of certifications and attending conferences, is expected.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, or closely related discipline.
  • Previous college teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
  • Experience in supervision and/or mentoring.





Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, or closely related disciplines (ABD considered).
  • Previous management experience directing a college-level sport, recreation and physical activity program or similar leadership position(s).
  • Successful record in managing a team.
  • Expertise in exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, exercise testing, and exercise prescription.
  • Ability and vision to develop and grow physical activity and well-being programming and increase connection to Kinesiology academic programs.
  • Professional certifications, such as NSCA CSCS, ACSM-EP/CEP, ACE CPT/MES.
  • Experience working with students, staff and community members from diverse backgrounds.
