 The Information Technology Services Department at Old Dominion University is seeking applicants for Senior DevOps and Automation Engineer (full-time, 12 month) position. The Senior DevOps and Automation Engineer will lead the way for our DevOps environment. The ideal engineer will bring their experiences, best practices, and a collaborative attitude to help drive DevOps initiatives. This position will effectively communicate with our development, security, and infrastructure teams to orchestrate the creation of solutions that can scale. The responsibilities include building a process for automation as well as contributing to the development of internal tools to achieve operational efficiency.

Required Education: Some knowledge of system administration in Linux environments.  Strong knowledge of configuration management tools.  Working knowledge of continuous integration tools such as Jenkins, Travis CI, Circle CI.  Proficiency in scripting languages including Bash, Python, and JavaScript.

Required Qualifications: Strong knowledge of DNS, TCPDUMP, CDNS, SSL, Git, Firewalls, and networking concepts (VPC, subnetting, VPNs, etc).  Working knowledge of software security best practices.  Strong communication and documentation skills.  Demonstrated ability to drive to goals and milestones while valuing and maintaining strong attention to detail.  Excellent judgment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.  Considerable knowledge of software development lifecycle best practices.  Self-motivated individual that possesses excellent time management and organizational skills. Considerable experience in application development using scripting and/or programming languages. Considerable experience in the support of users and applications using the Linux operating systems. Considerable experience in the automation and orchestration of enterprise environments. Considerable experience working with automation tooling (Terraform, Ansible, etc). Considerable experience with containers (Docker, Compose, ECS, Kubernetes). Some experience deploying microservice architecture, applications, and supporting services. Some experience in the management of containerized and virtual environments. Some experience building and deploying containerized applications in Docker, Singularity, and Kubernetes. Some experience with AI and Machine Learning toolsets and Data Analytics frameworks.

Preferred Qualifications: Some experience with development of higher education web and mobile applications.  B.S. or B.A. in Computer Science, MIS or a related computing intensive field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Conditions of Employment: 40-hour work week Monday-Friday; Some evenings and weekends; rotating on call. This position is considered essential personnel and subject to working during university closings. This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate. This is an open until filled recruitment.
