Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Department of Neurology is to provide state of the art comprehensive patient centered neurological care for adults and children, perform translational and clinical research to further understanding of disease mechanisms and develop new treatments, and train the next generation of neurologists and clinical neuroscientists. The Department of Neurology is committed to enhancing diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Chief Purpose of this position: The Muscular Dystrophy Translational Research Program (MDTRP) within the Department of Neurology is seeking a full-time member designed to grow the basic and translational elements of the program. In this role, the faculty member would take the lead on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of the muscular dystrophies and potential modifiers of disease progression with a goal of developing novel therapeutic approaches.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching
Faculty member will have the opportunity to supervise and teach graduate students from Human and Molecular Genetics or related disciplines.

Research
The Muscular Dystrophy Translational Research Program (MDTRP) is engaged in clinical and translation research projects. The faculty member will be expected to participate in, and when appropriate lead, clinical research and clinical trials.

Service
Faculty member will serve on departmental, School of Medicine, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g. reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Required Qualifications:
  • Completion of graduate work (PhD)
  • Minimum of 2 years of post doctoral work in an RNA laboratory.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Research focus in the muscular dystrophies
