The Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University is pleased to invite applications for the Spangler Distinguished Professorship of Early Child Literacy housed in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education ( RESE ). The person selected shall have experience and credentials as a teacher and scholar commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor with tenure in the Reich College of Education. The initial appointment will be for a period of five years and will be renewable subject to performance goals being met by the professorship holder. This position will potentially begin August 15, 2022.

The College offers undergraduate and graduate programs designed to prepare teacher candidates for initial and advanced licensure in teacher education programs, and literacy education specifically. For example, the Department of RESE offers an M.A. in Reading Education and coordinates a literacy concentration within the EdD. in Educational Leadership. The College also oversees two laboratory schools that provide a balanced education for children with a particular focus on evidence-based practices in reading instruction. The Spangler Distinguished Professorship of Early Child Literacy will join three other distinguished professors to serve as a network of early literacy expertise with the purpose of advancing the UNC System's current literacy initiatives across 15 educator preparation programs, through engaging in outreach and dissemination of best practice. The Spangler Distinguished Professors may serve on statewide literacy committees in an advisory capacity to elevate how UNC System institutions are ensuring the production of well-prepared teachers of reading. In addition, the cadre of professors will enhance partnerships with school districts across North Carolina to foster collaboration between teacher education programs and current teachers in the field.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must hold a doctoral-level degree in literacy or related field.
• Associate Professor or Professor with a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service.

• Established research paradigm in early literacy.
• Knowledge of evidence-based early literacy practices.
• Experience in educating pre-service and practicing teachers.
• Successful experience in collaborating with K-12 teachers and higher education faculty.

The Reich College of Education offers a broad range of comprehensive degree programs: Baccalaureate, Masters, Specialist and Doctoral levels as well as programs leading to certification and licensure. This position resides in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education which offers innovative programs focusing on all facets of reading, writing, language, specific areas of special education, and the Anderson Reading Clinic. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Spangler Distinguished Professor will teach literacy courses; maintain scholarly productivity in research; seek external funds to support research activities; mentor and collaborate with faculty and doctoral students; interact with, and provide instruction and professional development for the laboratory schools' instructional staff; provide service/outreach to the field and profession; and participate in literacy initiatives at the institution, local, state, national, and international levels.

1. The Spangler Distinguished Professor will teach at least two courses annually in Reich College of Education's teacher preparation programs, with the opportunity to teach undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral-level courses.
2. The Professor will assume a position of leadership in the college to collaborate, engage in professional development, and mentor doctoral students in early literacy.
3. The Professor will conduct research in early literacy to advance the field and establish a strong presence for the Reich College of Education in the state and nation as a leader in reading instruction.
4. The Professor will take the lead in serving as liaison between Appalachian's two laboratory schools and the reading education program as well as plan and facilitate professional development and instruction for lab school staff to extend the work of the literacy innovation leaders.
5. The Professor will engage in collaboration with other Spangler Distinguished Professors to address early literacy teacher education issues in the state of North Carolina, including the design and delivery of high-quality professional development for in-service teachers that will significantly enhance the capacity of schools to employ evidence-based practices in reading instruction.
6. The Professor will serve in an advisory capacity for progress in the UNC system's literacy initiatives to include enhancements to the UNC System Literacy Framework Implementation Guide.
