Purpose of Position
The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University invites applications for a position in Visual Communication Design for its selective-admission BA and BFA Visual Communication Design program. The position begins August 2022. We are seeking a dynamic designer/educator to fill a renewable lecturer position (non-tenure track) to teach across levels in our professionally-oriented, studio-based design program.

Established in 1968, NKU is a nationally recognized, metropolitan university of 16,000+ students located just seven miles from downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Greater Cincinnati is a national/international hub for design practice in the branding/interactive branding and packaging industries, in particular. The NKU Visual Communication Design program is rooted in valuing a fundamental understanding of the visual and functional principles of design, while nurturing the individuality of each student to achieve distinctive, meaningful, and memorable work. The program addresses a broad array of media and design contexts.

The region is home to thriving arts organizations and venues such as the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Contemporary Arts Center, the American Sign Museum, and the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center; historically significant cultural institutions such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and Cincinnati Museum Center; distinctive libraries, such as the Lloyd Library and Museum; vibrant community experiences such as the Blink Festival and abundant ArtWorks murals; a healthy business community; unique neighborhoods; top schools for families; and numerous parks, among other things. Primary Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to teach three undergraduate classes per semester (6 classes per academic year) in alignment with current/best practices in industry, and participate in department/school activities including student reviews, and program-related committee work. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates are required to have a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design or related field, and extensive practice, expertise, or experience that demonstrates equivalency to an MFA / MDES degree, or hold a terminal degree. Candidates must also be capable communicators, demonstrating the potential for a successful career in teaching in an ever-evolving field.

Preferred Qualifications
The most desirable applicants will demonstrate an optimal combination of skillsets and expertise in more than one of the following: typography, branding, visual systems, packaging, information design, graphic design history, motion design, design research & process, and/or other pertinent areas of practice; in particular, candidates demonstrating success in digital product design (web/mobile/environmental), UI/UX design, experience design, and/or innovative /future-aligned areas of interaction design will be closely considered. The Visual Communication Design Program is open to innovative and broad skill sets that may benefit our program in unexpected ways.
