The Opportunity:

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking a Mental Health Counselor to join the Counseling Services department in Prescott, Arizona. Embry-Riddle's Prescott Campus is respected worldwide for cutting-edge instruction and training for tomorrow’s aviation, aerospace, security and intelligence leaders. Prescott is a mile-high city and its climate reflects seasonable weather excellent for flying. Daytime averages are 80°F in the summer and 45°F in the winter. At 5,000 ft. above sea level, it boasts a mild climate, clean air, pristine wilderness areas, and nearby national forests. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

The Mental Health Counselor role is a 12 month, 40 hours/week position. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to providing individual, couples, and group counseling using a brief treatment framework of counseling under the direct supervision of the Counseling Director. Crisis intervention is also an essential job duty for this position. Must be able to conduct appropriate assessments, provide feedback on these assessments, and give appropriate referrals for students who have needs exceeding the scope of work provided by Counseling Services. The counselor will also consult with Wellness Center providers regarding student needs. Provide consultation services to concerned faculty, students, and staff. This position may see students mandated to attend counseling by the University. The counselor will work collaboratively with the Counseling Center staff, meeting weekly with the Counseling Director. Protocols are in place and will be followed as far as the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners and ACA Code of Ethics. The counselor will continue to keep current in counseling practices by attending professional conferences and training sessions, required for licensing. This position may require public presentations to various groups on campus by providing wellness education and outreach to students and staff in conjunction with Human Resources. This position may require some after-hours availability based on need. The position is also responsible for maintaining one’s own up-to-date and active liability insurance is required.

Job Functions
  • Provide short-term individual, couples, group, crisis counseling services to the students at the Prescott campus under the direct supervision of the Counseling Director. Must work collaboratively with Counseling Director, contracted psychologist, and other providers. Provide consultation for concerned faculty members, staff, students, and parents. Outreach and after-hours programming and services will also be required. Maintain ethically sound record-keeping using DAP, of all student counseling interactions. Stay abreast of current counseling practices and research, by attending conferences and training sessions. Will also be responsible for doing some case management and wellness checks as needed.
  • Special Programming such as counseling presentations to various campus populations, faculty and staff based on campus need (This may include: Veterans, Orientation Leaders, ROTC, Athletics, Student Life, Fraternities/Sororities, Wellness Committee and Flight line students). Establish working relationships with relevant departments and offices on campus such as: The Dean of Student’s Office, Office of Housing or Resident Life, Campus Safety Officers, The Office of Student Activities, Center for International Programs and Services, Athletics, Disability Support Services, Women’s and Diversity Center, Veterans Organization, etc. Assist and support the Dean of Students Office in crisis intervention and behavior management cases, as well as assessments for students with mental health needs. Will also be responsible for monthly articles for Horizon’s Campus Newspaper.
  • Other duties as assigned: Assisting Counseling Center with operational duties such as scheduling, answering phones, and assisting staff when needed. Canceling appointments when needed with clients. Making appointments for future visits with students. Checking students out when reviewing dictation.

Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or related field.

LAC- Licensed Associate Counselor in Arizona or LPC Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Arizona or near completion is preferred.

Experience in assessment, diagnosis, and implementation of interventions for depression, anxiety, alcohol/drug use/abuse, and developmental concerns frequently faced by college students is required. Must understand DSM-5, have familiarity with frequently used assessment tools such as the BDI, BAI, DES-11, AUDIT and /ADHD Amen checklist. Must have knowledge on creating and/or modifying PowerPoints in order to give presentation to campus community.

Prefer a minimum of 2 years working experience in a university counseling center, but not necessary. Experience working with many different facets of a college campus community. Experience providing services to a diverse population of students. Some experience with college counseling programming, preferable, but not necessary. Experience with working with adults in an outpatient setting.

All activities of the Mental Health Counselor will be overseen by the Counseling Director.

Must be able to handle increased stress levels and multi-task. Must be computer literate and able to work independently. Must be willing to learn and work well under the direction of others.

Must be able to work closely with Counseling Center staff. Must show professionalism, but also have a sense of humor! This is a team environment and flexibility is required.
