ITS is embarking on a strategic planning process to align services and resources with several exciting new initiatives identified in Colgate’s Third Century Plan. Many of Colgate’s new initiatives require significant ITS project management (e.g. robotic process automation, facilities management software). The Project manager will have the ability to have a broad impact on the execution of these important activities. Accountabilities
As a member of the Shared Services and Infrastructure ( SSI ) team this position works with campus partners and Information Technology Services ( ITS ) to plan and organize projects, determine tasks and timelines, coordinate ITS resources, set expectations, and help ITS manage its workload more efficiently and effectively. This position will lead large projects and handle minor technical duties as necessary. As a key member of the ITS organization, the IT Project Manager fosters cross-team collaborations that support a healthy organizational culture and provide improved services to the Colgate community.

A ccountabilities include:

Manage large projects requiring resources of the ITS team from initiation to successful completion. Provides oversight, direction and growth opportunities to IT project team members for all tasks related to these projects. Ensure the project team provides exceptional customer service. Strive to make project work fun.

Manage the project portfolio for the SSI team. Ensure project goals, purpose and criteria for success are clearly defined. Evaluate progress and success against performance standards. Collaboratively support project planning and work with supervisors and staff to help create realistic and achievable project plans given the staffing available and other project schedules. Create project plans for large projects and assist others in the creation of smaller project plans as needed. Schedule and coordinate project meetings.

Continually improve and manage the ITS project management process, including all steps from project intake through project completion. Regularly review and evaluate opportunities to improve the project management best practices. Assist ITS in the development of best practices and actively engage in improving ITS and its processes.

Assist and support ITS colleagues acting in a project leader role. Provide ongoing partnership, coaching and mentoring to functional area project leads.

Communicate regularly with project stakeholders and ITS staff on project expectations, project status, and progress. Implement strategic best practices and tactical actions to help deliver projects on time and within budget. Communicate clearly with all stakeholders when circumstances require a change in timeline, scope or budget. Keep ITS management apprised of project issues and roadblocks.

Provide motivation and mentoring to all members of the project team. Maximize the effective use of team members on the project. Set clear expectations and hold people accountable for results and meeting deadlines.

Develop productive working relationships characterized by a high level of cooperation and mutual respect with faculty, students, staff, other work units, vendors, etc. to meet mutual goals and objectives.

Participate in professional development activities.

Perform other related duties and projects as assigned. Professional Experience/ Qualifications
  • Three or more years of project management experience
  • Broad background in project management. Ability to collaboratively create project plans and manage projects.
  • Proven ability to effectively lead a group and mentor others. Ability to motivate staff on tasks by providing challenging opportunities, mentorship and milestone celebrations as appropriate. Demonstrated experience in leading diverse teams.
  • Understanding of project management principles and available methodologies. Significant knowledge of project planning tools with evidence of practical application.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain IT concepts and technologies to functional area leaders, and business concepts to the IT staff.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate the project management vision.
  • Ability to effectively lead large projects and run large meetings.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Some familiarity with programming and scripting, enterprise systems, application or web development.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team. Willing to collaborate, share ideas openly and learn.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the academic, cultural and social diversity in the Colgate University community.
Preferred Qualifications

Education
