Teaching Associate for the Department of Chemistry

College of Science and Mathematics

Position Summary :

The Department of Chemistry seeks graduate students as Teaching Associates applicants. Teaching Associates typically are responsible for providing classroom and/or laboratory instruction.

The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign given Teaching Associates to the courses that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.

Anticipated Appointment Dates : This position is opened until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified.

Fall 2022: August 17, 2022 - December 22, 2022

Spring 2023: January 17, 2023 - May 20, 2023

Hours/Units per week : Students can work up to 20-hours per week;
  • 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hrs per week (40hrs x 1-unit/15-unit)
  • 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)
  • 3-6 units
  • no more than 6-units
Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course(s) to which the teaching associate will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member(s) in charge of the course(s):
  • Perform laboratory or discussion section instruction for one or more course
  • Use of Canvas or designated learning management system (LMS)
  • Create a laboratory or discussion classroom environment that is conducive to
  • Create assignments for students
  • Prepare course materials, e.g. organizational set-up of lab materials or quizzes
  • Administer/proctor examinations (in lab/discussion sections or for the lecture
    course associated with such)
  • Assess student performance on lab exams/assignments in a timely manner so
    students can learn from the feedback. Timely assessment is necessary for the
    progress of the student and for integrating the grades for the final course grades
  • Show responsiveness to improvement suggestions from faculty, coordinator, and
    student evaluations of instructional performance
  • Supervise small discussion groups
  • Assist students in class and/or laboratory hours, and fully utilizing the contact
    time within the course.
  • Attend Departmental T.A. orientation sessions at the beginning of each semester
  • Attend meetings scheduled by the faculty or staff for purposes of briefing,
    coordination, and discussion of course content
  • Attend appropriate safety training sessions and ensure that students in laboratory
    sections are following safety procedures
  • Assist with departmental assessment activities when requested
  • Perform other assignments supportive of university instruction
  • Operate in a collegial fashion with members of the Department and with other
    university employees
Qualifications :
  • A bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field pertinent to the course(s) being taught
  • Matriculation as a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry in good academic standing.
  • Mastery of the subject matter of the course to be taught
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • If the TA is not a new student, they must demonstrate satisfactory progress towards the degree in consultation with the graduate coordinator and their research mentor.
  • Willingness to perform multiple tasks and to take guidance from the faculty member(s) or lab coordinator associated with the course(s).

The California State University Teaching Associate Classification and Standards
  • Evaluations: For details please view the Academic Policy Manual, Section 311
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salary is calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.
  • Salary Schedule: The salary schedule can be found on the Faculty Affairs website here .
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by the Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the teaching associate.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11 , a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department teaching associate position.
  • Teaching Associate is a student position for those actively enrolled in a graduate program at Fresno State.
  • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.
