Teaching Associate for the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
College Science and Mathematics
Position Overview:
Determinant on successful TA Eligibility and Department Eligibility, The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is seeking TA applicants. Teaching Associates typically are responsible for providing classroom and/or laboratory instruction for general education courses: EES 1, EES 4, EES 5 and/or EES 9.
- Determinant on successful TA Eligibility and Department Eligibility, TAs will teach sections of 1-4 labs the following semester and could have opportunities to teach other beginning courses in the department.
- The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign given Teaching Associates to the courses that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester.
- Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.
Fall 2022: August 17, 2022 - December 22, 2022
Spring 2023: January 17, 2023 - May 20, 2023
Hours/Units per week : Students can work up to 20-hours per week;
- 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hrs per week (40hrs x 1-unit/15-unit)
- 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)
- 3-6 units
- No more than 6-units
This is a part-time teaching position constituting a maximum of 6 weighted teaching units per semester.
- Communicating lab curriculum and expectations to students (as instructor of record)
- Preparing course materials, administering examinations
- laboratory activity set up and clean up
- Maintain office hours and providing students with extra assistance
- Will be responsible for grading student work and determining course grades
- Attend a weekly organizational meeting
- Concurrent enrollment in the EES Department teaching assistant training course is required
- Also, incumbents may assist faculty with field experience, supervision, simulation exercises and/or research projects.
- Completion of a bachelor's degree in geology or related field, or equivalent coursework.
- Admission to and concurrent enrollment in the Fresno State Master’s Program in Geology with a 3.0 GPA or better.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.

- Evaluations: For details, please view the Academic Policy Manual, Section 311
- Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The monthly salary is calculated based on the Weighted Teaching Units assigned.
- Salary Schedule: The salary schedule can be found on the Faculty Affairs website here .
- Assignments: Assignments are usually made by the Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the individual faculty member.
- Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11 , a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department teaching associate position.
