The Special Collections Access Services Supervisor is a critical frontline member of a very busy, high profile, team-oriented academic special collections reference/public services department committed to providing high quality customer service. The Special Collections Access Services Supervisor is responsible for managing the operations of the Special Collections Research Center ( SCRC ) Reading Room (SCRC’s onsite service point) and for supervising undergraduate and graduate student workers. The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with university policies governing access to records and ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of researcher, donor, and creator records. The Supervisor will also research and answer reference questions; participate in the reference desk rotation; supervise the routine shelving, retrieval, and reshelving of rare and archival materials; coordinate and manage offsite collection retrievals for the department; manage patron requests for duplication of collection materials; and work on other projects as assigned. The Supervisor reports directly to the SCRC Reference and Access Services Librarian and works collaboratively with staff from across the department. Occasional evening hours required. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in public service areas of a library, museum, or other customer service setting.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and/or service management experience, preferably in a public services or customer service environment.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage all Reading Room operations and related desk staffing schedules during operational hours of Special Collections Research Center Reading Room. Coordinate visit requests for researchers. Routinely update and implement Reading Room and access services policies and procedures in accordance with best practices and in collaboration with the SCRC Reference and Access Services Librarian.
  • Directly supervise team of at least 5-7 graduate and undergraduate students. Direct the work of SCRC staff and students during assigned Reading Room shifts. Plan and implement the orientation and ongoing training of staff and student assistants. Collaborate with the SCRC Reference and Access Services Librarian when managing graduate student workers’ reference activities.
  • Research and answer reference questions related to Special Collections and University Archives materials from onsite and remote researchers. Participate in the Reading Room reference desk rotation.
  • Supervise the routine shelving, retrieval, and reshelving of Special Collections and University Archives materials. Coordinate and manage offsite collection material retrievals for the department.
  • Manage patron requests for duplication of Special Collections and University Archives materials. Coordinate with Reference and Access Services Librarian for patron digitization requests of Special Collections and University Archives materials to ensure compliance with preservation guidelines, donor restrictions, and US copyright law.
