Job Summary:
Under general direction, this position is responsible for positioning North Idaho College (NIC) with the internal and external stakeholders of the college through the creation and implementation of strategic communications, community and media relations and two-way engagement. This position works closely with the Chief Communications and Government Relations Officer (CCGRO) to provide a wide variety of support to strategize and coordinate projects that provide advocacy, relationship building and awareness for NIC. This position helps share North Idaho’s story and opportunities for students and the community. Many assignments are confidential in nature and require independent judgment and diplomacy.

Job Duties:


This list includes but is not limited to the following:
  • Collaborates with team members, college leaders, and other departments to ensure the NIC brand voice and writing style are maintained for all communications, community relations, marketing and advertising purposes.
  • Consults with others across the institution to develop strategies for effective communication plans, processes and procedures.
  • Assists in development of written executive communications and communications strategies; to include writing and editing articles, correspondence and reports; preparing presentations for the CCGRO and working with the president’s office.
  • Assists in development of internal and external communications strategies for various situations including crisis communications, media and community relations, and change management.
  • Creates and/or delegates the creation of internal communications including employee newsletter content and mass email and text communications, providing editorial overview to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Creates and/or delegates the development of articles and stories for publication on the college website and for submission to the media.
  • Organizes and coordinates college events that involve local, state, and national governmental officials and the community at large, including those occurring in evenings and on weekends.
  • Manages day-to-day media relations including responding to media requests, creating and distributing news releases, public notices and other media advisories.
  • Manages public records and information requests not handled by CCGRO.
  • Develops communication strategies for the NIC website and works with the marketing and web managers to execute these strategies.
  • Produces the college’s podcast, oversees other departments’ podcasting and advocates for other contemporary multi-media platforms.
  • Conducts detailed research using the Internet and web-based information, particularly in the area of local, state and national topics related to higher education.
  • Tracks relevant legislation and distributes to CCGRO and others as needed.
  • Assists with participation in various state and local government activities, chambers of commerce functions, college partnerships and other events involving the college.
  • Assists the CCGRO with community and public relations planning.
  • Provides day to day supervision of communications coordinator.
  • Represents the college at various college, community outreach and special events.
  • Serves on the emergency response/crisis communications team.
  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships and communication with community partners, educates them on college matters, and regularly responds to their requests for information and sources in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with and assists others in the department on a team approach to communicating and interacting with internal and external stakeholders, including filling in for coworkers as needed.
  • Keeps management aware of public attitudes and concerns of the many groups and organizations with which they must deal.
  • Represents the department and the college on various internal and external committees.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with supervisor, college staff, students, and the community.
Marginal duties:
  • May supervise part time, contract or student workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience : Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and a minimum of three years full-time equivalent related work experience is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Strong knowledge of fundamental public relations, communications, government relations and professional writing and editing
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
• Strong verbal, written and editing communication skills
• Ability to prepare and conduct effective presentations and coordinate strategic community relations opportunities
• Strong financial and budgetary skills
• Proficient in using current versions of computer applications, including: Microsoft Office, In-Design, Adobe Professional, Photoshop, Webdriver, and social media   
• Proficient skills in photography and photo editing preferred
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend events
• Ability to operate standard office equipment including phone and copier
