Minimum Education/Training/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Education or Related Fields. Minimum of two years’ experience in providing academic advising and mentoring to low-income, first-generation students or other academically, socially, or economically disadvantaged population. Experience working in post-secondary education. Preferred Education/Training/Experience
Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish. Minimum Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of federal TRIO grant programs or programs similar to TRIO grants.

- Knowledge of academic and/or career counseling techniques.

- Knowledge of diagnostic testing such as TSIA2 to assess preparation of students for college courses.

-Knowledge in the completion of the on-line FAFSA process.

- Skills in interpersonal communication, cooperative problem solving and the ability exhibit effective public speaking skills.

- Skill in listening to issues, synthesizing information and reaching sound conclusions.

- Skill in evaluating a student’s academic interests and desires and formulating a plan designed to assist the student in achieving their goals.

- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, relate in a professional, helpful manner in person and over the phone; relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situation.

- Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize, and follow multiple project and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail; work independently in meeting various time deadlines and work pressures with frequent interruptions.

- Ability to ready and interpret regulations related to academic programs and student requirements for participation in various programs.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department staff, faculty, students and the public.

- Ability to work with databases.

None. Job Duties
- Provide comprehensive academic advising and career transfer counseling services to both individual and groups of students in the TRIO -Student Support Services program using effective communication techniques with various modes of technology; encourage and guide students to define and develop realistic goals.

- Collaborate with college recruiters and other department staff on new and returning students in the areas of financial aid, admissions, student success center serving as an advocate on behalf of students; work in collaboration with the SSS Program Coordinator.

- Develop and conduct workshops in support of student learning and career options.

- Assist in providing tutorial services to program participants, which may include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, science and other subjects; advise and assist in post-secondary course selection, assist students with information on both the full range of student financial aid programs, benefits and resources for locating public and private scholarships; and assistance in completing financial aid application.

- Provides education and counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy and assist students in applying for admission to four-year universities.

-Assist in driving 15-passanger van on college transfer trips and/or scheduled cultural event when needed.

- Provides individualized counseling for career and academic information, activities, and instruction designed to acquaint students with career options.

- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements

- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
