The University of Montana Information Technology department invites applications for an IT Business Analyst to join their team. The person assigned to this position will report to the Manager of Business Information Systems in Information Technology (IT), and be part of a team that helps departments identify, plan, and implement business process improvements using technology systems in IT. The individual in this position will provide departments consultative help in increasing efficiencies in their office using various business/enterprise systems.

The employee in this role will be responsible for project management, business process analysis/re-engineering, analysis and documentation of both current and the future state of business processes. The person occupying this position will help identify new system requirements, report specifications, functional specifications for system use cases, functional testing, leading the development of an appropriate training strategy and supporting materials. The individual assigned to this position will work with the operational management of new systems to design and establish an ongoing business systems analysis support strategy, supported by documented policies and procedures for the operational system.

Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Perform business and systems analysis work; conduct requirements analysis via information gathering sessions with business users, technical staff, students, and clients to define business requirements
  • Convert business requirements into technical/functional specifications
  • Conduct analysis and documentation of existing business processes and identify/recommend process improvement opportunities
  • Assist in the development of training materials and conduct technical training sessions with functional users to improve adoption and effective use of relevant technologies products
  • Assist in the evaluation of API/Web Service tools for feasibility/impact to the business and in the deployment of various enterprise systems
  • Provide a solution-based approach to all challenges and execute a quantitative approach to solution design and documentation
Required Skills
  • Expert level skills with MS Office applications such as Excel, Visio and Word.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; comfortable speaking and presenting to large audiences and the ability to communicate in both a technical and business manner depending on the target audience.
  • Proven technical writing skills and ability to produce quality documentation for technical support staff
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to document, plan, and manage large sized technical projects.
  • Strong ability to work in a team of diverse individuals and to share knowledge with peers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data management, systems design, and application development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in relational databases such as Oracle or an equivalent
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision making.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and productive business relationships with others
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, time-management, and organizational skills to complete tasks with critical deadlines while paying attention to detail
  • Ability to follow and apply the University of Montana and departmental policies and procedures
  • Effective communication skills, including both written and verbal communications
Minimum Required Experience
  • Experience to perform at this level is typically acquired with a Bachelor's degree in MIS, CIS, Business, or a related Technical field or four (4) years of related work experience; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully discharge the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in working with a Student, Human Resources, or Finance information system of a higher education institution.
  • PMP Certification
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar role working with ERP/CRM systems
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Document Management Systems, Workflow systems, or related systems

UM Information Technology (UM IT) is the strategic campus partner that provides unified technological solutions required for instruction, research, administration, and public service activities of the University of Montana.

  • Enterprise Technology (ET), responsible for application/web development, enterprise information systems, database administration, customer relationship management systems, enterprise project management, and ERP administration for Student, Finance and Human Resource systems.
  • Cyberinfrastructure, responsible for IT facilities, datacenters/servers, classroom technology, directory/email services, campus network infrastructure, telephone system and UM's network connectivity across Montana.
  • Client Experience, responsible for a variety of client support services and provides the front-door for technology support. including the UM IT Helpdesk, UM Online LMS support, PC/Desktop/Laptop provisioning, software licensing, enterprise application management, faculty classroom support and computer lab management.
  • Information Security, responsible for Security Operations, Identity Management Systems, and the Information Security Program, while coordinating with university audit, legal counsel, and risk management to support the university’s missions and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Data Office/Office of Institutional Effectiveness, responsible for maintaining data governance, creating common reporting definitions and standard reports for data that supports the operational functions of UM.

Position Title: IT Business Analyst (Comp Sys Analyst II)

Position Number: NEW

Department: Enterprise Info Systems (Information Technology)

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Flexible – Typically Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary: $23.84/hr

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
