Job Summary

The College of Lake County is currently looking for a Biology Lab Specialist to join the College of Lake County Team. The Biology Lab Specialist, under the supervision of the Associate Dean in the Biological and Health Sciences division, is responsible for the preparation of teaching labs at both the Southlake campus, located in Vernon Hills, and the Lakeshore campus, located in Waukegan. The Specialist prepares and sets up all solutions, supplies and equipment needed for student labs, assists instructors in dispensing special equipment, coordinates and supervises student workers, orders supplies as needed, maintains inventory of supplies and equipment, and maintains and monitors the cleanliness, security and safety of the stockroom and laboratory spaces.

Required Qualification(s)
  1. Associate’s Degree with emphasis in Chemistry, Biology, or related field.
  2. Excellent organizational skills, good interpersonal communication, and strong knowledge of scientific experiments and equipment relevant to the biology laboratory.


Desired Qualification(s)
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field.
  2. Laboratory work experience, preferably in an academic setting.
  3. Inventory control experience.
  4. Knowledge of safe laboratory practices and proper hazardous material handling.

Special Instructions Summary

This is a part-time flex position and employment shall be on an at-will basis, the duration of which shall be in accordance with the needs of the College of Lake County.

Part-time flex employees are not eligible to participate in any benefits program at the College, including tuition reimbursement, tuition waiver, health insurance or paid time off.

This postiion will remain open until filled.

Summary of Essential Functions
  1. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the Biology labs at the Southlake Campus and Lakeshore Campus, the preparation and storage rooms associated with it, and ensures their proper functioning and maintenance.
  2. Prepares and sets up all solutions, supplies and equipment needed for laboratories conducted at the Southlake Campus.
  3. Monitors and replenishes supplies as needed.
  4. Maintains current knowledge of the operation of equipment and of laboratory techniques.
  5. Performs minor, periodic maintenance of equipment; arranges for service calls when necessary.
  6. Assists the instructors in dispensing special equipment and replacing equipment for students during lab periods.
  7. Assists instructors in operating equipment and locating supplies.
  8. Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment, orders laboratory supplies as needed, maintains files of purchase requisitions and orders, maintains contact with suppliers, and receives all items purchased by the area.
  9. Travels to local suppliers to pick up materials as needed.
  10. Maintains and monitors the cleanliness, security and safety of stockroom and laboratory spaces, including storage and use of hazardous chemicals.
  11. Coordinates and supervises student workers.
  12. Assists in the preparation of the budget by submitting lists of supplies and materials needed.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Associate Dean.
