The Dance Program of the School of Theatre & Dance at the Kathrine G. The successful candidate will teach a 1/1 course load, vigorously pursue their creative/scholarly research, and be an active participant in both CWMCA and the Dance Program.

The Scholar in Residence is designed for a post-graduate candidate of the highest caliber in their respective field. Scholars will engage in interdisciplinary methods of inquiry and dialogue, as well as consult/collaborate with faculty, students and schools across the UH campus. Candidates will collaborate with programs within the Mitchell Center and the Dance Program, as well as regularly meeting with the other CWMCA Scholars. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach in the areas of both dance and interdisciplinary arts.

Applicants should work in two or more artistic disciplines or have clear interdisciplinary research interests they wish to pursue while a Fellow. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

The Scholar in Residence in Dance is open to choreographers, dance practitioners, and dance scholars with an interest in interdisciplinary studies. Candidate areas of dance creative/scholarly interest could include choreography, curriculum development, dance theory, research methods in dance, critical analysis, philosophy, pedagogy, and/or history. The candidate should have a strong background in the embodied practice of dance.

The Scholar in Residence in Dance will:
  • Meet regularly with the other CWMCA Scholars and the Director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts to address the connection of their activities to the goals/vision of CWMCA, to plan activities with this group that highlight collaboration, and to conduct research in their field.
  • Create and execute a community engagement event through CWMCA and coordinate documentation of the project for CWMCA archives. The community engagement event can be related to any of the programs in the schedule of the Center such as Visiting Artists, Artists in Residence or Lecture series.
  • Teach one course per semester (1/1) in either DANCE or IARTS (Interdisciplinary Arts), to be decided in discussion with the Directors of Dance & IARTS.
  • Choreograph a short student-performed work in the 2023 Spring Dance Concert.
  • Attend CWMCA & Dance events.
  • Serve as a community ambassador for the Mitchell Center and Dance Program.
Please submit with your application:
  • A one-page statement of purpose, which includes how interdisciplinary practice/research informs work and/or what you hope to pursue or expand through interdisciplinary methods and inquiry.
  • A narrative that describes your teaching and presents your teaching evaluations (quantitative summary, relevant student comments) and/or a letter from a professor who has observed your class.
  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A sample of your creative/scholarly research.
  • Contact information for three professional references.
