Classification Title:

Assistant or Associate Scientist

Job Description: The University of Florida (UF) is ranked amongst America’s five best public universities by U.S. News Reports. Located in Gainesville in North Central Florida, UF is a dynamic community with access to all the benefits of a great college town including arts, sports, restaurants, museums, amenities and more. We unite scientists, engineers, and physicians to distill practical solutions from pure science, all while embracing the experiences and ideas of a diverse workforce as the core of our strength. The Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) at the University of Florida is the premier campus biotechnology shared resource center, with the mission of empowering scientific discovery and innovation throughout the University of Florida research community by providing access to world-class biotechnology expertise and instrumentation. The ICBR is in search of a highly motivated and experienced individual to serve as Scientific Director to lead our Cytometry Shared Resource Core in fulfilling this mission. This is a non-tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Scientist, reporting to the ICBR Associate Director for Science. The ICBR Cytometry Shared Resource provides critical support to UF investigators conducting research across a wide array of topics including plant and animal cell biology, insects, and microbes. The Cytometry Shared Resource Scientific Director will serve as the site expert in cytometry and lead all laboratory operations in flow analysis, cell sorting, and confocal microscopy. The Scientific Director will work with the Associate Director for Science in the development, validation, and implementation of new methodologies in cytometry and confocal microscopy and assist in the acquisition of cutting-edge instrumentation. Specific areas of interest for the ICBR Cytometry Shared resource are in immunophenotyping to support research clinical trials, super high-resolution microscopy and single cell isolation for downstream RNASeq and proteomic analysis. As leader of the Cytometry Shared Resource, the Scientific Director sets the priorities for the Core and its staff, leads all Core staff meetings, attends the ICBR Senior Staff meetings and ICBR Strategic Retreats, and schedules meetings of the Cytometry Scientific Advisory Group, a faculty-level oversight committee. Additional duties include establishing validated standard operating procedures to ensure rigor and reproducibility, implementing robust self-user training initiatives, effective budget management, rate setting and review, and staff supervision and recruitment. The successful candidate must have the ability to think independently, be an effective and collaborative leader, possess excellent problem-solving skills, and be committed to providing outstanding service to users of the Cytometry Shared Resource. Key leadership roles include ensuring that laboratory staff adhere to ICBR policies and guidelines, monitoring equipment self-usage by ICBR customers, and participating in ICBR strategic planning. Outstanding customer service is key to ICBR’s success, and this position requires a positive, collegial, and customer-centric attitude. This is a full-time position within the ICBR with a 100% commitment to leading the Cytometry Shared Resource. The Scientific Director will not establish an independent research program and is not dependent upon external grant-based funding. The ICBR environment fosters a welcoming and creative workplace that encourages open dialogue and the free expression of ideas. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and all members of ICBR are expected to treat others with respect, consideration, and professionalism.

To summarize, the Scientific Director will:

• Serve as the ICBR expert in flow analysis and cell sorting, staying abreast of the latest developments in the field of cytometry and confocal microscopy. Perform the administrative duties necessary for a fee-for-service facility operation, such as data analysis and delivery, and weekly billing for services. Develop strategic plans for increasing awareness of the shared resource facility and the services provided.
• Lead and supervise the core staff of 4 – 6 individuals at two on-campus locations. Supervisory duties include holding regular staff meetings, performing quarterly performance appraisals using the UFEngaged system, reviewing and approving time, providing necessary trainings, and leading the hiring process when necessary.
• Provide consultation to assist users in sample preparation, experimental design, optimal instrument configuration, antibody panel design, and image and data analysis.
• Implement detailed laboratory policies regarding complex scientific instrument usage, technical staffing roles, and availability of laboratory services towards the general UF research community. Develop and maintain laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent quality across all staff members and oversee the development of any new SOPs.
• Work with the Associate Director for Science to facilitate the process for the acquisition of cutting-edge instrumentation, as well as in the development, validation, and implementation of new methodologies in cytometry and confocal microscopy.
• Oversee and monitor self-user training initiatives. Ensure that all users are fully trained and provide advanced education, training, and consultation to users and staff on the highly specialized equipment, scientific research, or technology. Teach and develop the necessary training courses.
• Provide support for UF investigator research proposals and manuscripts.
• Work with the Associate Director for Science on the development of S10 proposals to expand core instrumentation.
• Represent ICBR at national meetings, such as ABRF and ISAC.
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
