Scope of Job: The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is seeking applications for a tenured Associate or Full Professor to serve as Director of the Creative Writing Program within the College of Fine Arts, beginning Fall 2018. Our graduate program awards MFA degrees; undergraduate creative writing classes are applied toward a CW concentration in the BA English degree plan. We seek an established writer who also has leadership skills and administrative vision. The successful candidate will have a publication record commensurate with their rank (Associate or Full) and will be able to demonstrate a commitment to developing and strengthening a diverse, bilingual creative writing program. 

The Rio Grande Valley is located on the Texas Mexico border and UTRGV is a Hispanic serving university. UTRGV is a distributed campus with locations in Edinburg, Harlingen, and Brownsville. All UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success as well as advancing UTRGV’s vision, mission and core priorities.

The successful candidate will be assigned the standard academic teaching load for a Program Director.

Qualifications to meet the ranks of Associate Professor or Professor:

Associate Professor must have published a coherent body of creative work in reputable venues, typically at least one book, or the common-sense equivalent appropriate to your genre. 

Full Professor, typically, will have published at least a second book (or equivalent), in addition to more often finding themselves in national level conversations. The quality of applicants' work matters as much as the quantity.

Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree in creative writing or related field from an accredited university. 

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications: Record of publication with potential for continuing achievement. Commitment to goals of bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism as appropriate for the mission of UTRGV and the Creative Writing Program.  

Salary: Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience

Additional Information UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
