Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director for Hokie Wellness and serving on the leadership team of the Assistant Vice President for Health and Well-Being, the Director for Residential Well-being serves as a collaborative, creative, and visionary change leader for Virginia Tech’s transformational new residential model, which places student success and well-being at the heart of the residential experience. Through teamwork, collaboration, and innovation, the Director champions a culture of inclusion and an agile, upstream, and data-informed approach to anticipate and respond to the needs of current and future Virginia Tech students. The Director promotes organizational practices, policies, training, and partnerships that foster well-being at all levels of the social-ecological model (i.e., individual, relationship, community, and societal) and across the multiple dimensions of well-being (i.e., physical, social, community, financial, purpose/career, and mental/emotional).
The Director for Residential Well-being works in concert with Student Affairs’ Chief Inclusion and Belonging Officer to infuse inclusion and belonging into every aspect of the residential experience and partners closely with Housing Services, Student Affairs Facilities, Living Learning Programs, the Corps of Cadets, and Fraternity and Sorority Life to ensure an intentional and tailored approach to supporting students’ lives on campus. The Director also works closely with the Director of Cook Counseling, who provides oversight for five live-in embedded counselors, as well as other colleagues on the Student Affairs Leadership Team, whose departments are part of Residential Well-being’s matrixed organizational structure and who regularly provide resources and engagement opportunities for residential students. Through these relationships and structures, the director leverages the full power and expertise of Student Affairs to create a holistic, cohesive student experience and maximize the potential impact of the residential environment for student success.

The Director for Residential Well-being provides direct supervision, in partnership with the Chief Inclusion and Belonging Officer for a team of five talented Managing Directors for Residential Well-being and Inclusion, who each lead a team of professional staff and student leaders to cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and holistic experience for approximately 2,000 residential students.

The Director for Residential Well-being oversees a comprehensive, on-going assessment plan to inform strategy and ensure continuous improvement of the Residential Well-being model and its impacts on student well-being. The Director also oversees all operational and fiscal responsibilities for Residential-Well-being.

Required Qualifications

The selected candidate must demonstrate a passion for student success and an unrelenting commitment to well-being and inclusion. A master's degree and progressive experience in a related field is required, which could include higher education, public health, social work, counseling, or areas related to well-being, diversity and inclusion, etc. The Director for Residential Well-being must demonstrate the ability to effect and lead through change as well as comfort with the ambiguity that innovation requires. The Director must have experience leading and engaging a team of professional staff and fostering partnerships. Experience in and a commitment to inclusion and belonging and an understanding of the changing needs of undergraduate and graduate students is essential. The Director for Residential Well-being should be collaborative, innovative, and adaptable with strong organizational and communication skills. The candidate should possess the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities; take initiative in a dynamic, fast paced environment; develop strong faculty and professional partnerships and engagement; and lead through influence. In addition, the candidate should have experience convening and engaging teams of professionals and/or students to support a shared vision.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include experience with the social-ecological framework for behavior change and the dimensions of well-being; budget development and management; strategic planning; program development; and change management.
