Position Description:

The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division seeks a Program Director at the Assistant or Associate level to teach in and provide administrative support to the M.A. in Cultural Heritage Management (CHM) and the M.A. in Museum Studies (MS) graduate programs. Of particular interest are candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds. The Assistant/Associate Program Director is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Senior Lecturer. The Assistant/Associate Program Director will have significant interaction/collaboration with the Assistant Program Director of the Museum Studies program, the Program Coordinator for Museum Studies, and the Program Coordinator for the Post Baccalaureate certificate in Digital Curation, and will report to the Program Director for Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage Management and the Associate Dean for AAP. The position may be located at the Washington, DC location at 1717 Massachusetts Avenue or remote. This position is expected to begin on July 1, 2022.

The Assistant/Associate Director will have the following faculty and administrative responsibilities:

Faculty Responsibilities
  • Teaching 5 graduate courses per year, including the preparation for and time spent in the classroom (online or onsite), using best practices for online teaching, engaging and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in the learning process, responding to student questions;
  • Student Advising, including advising for the Research/ Capstone in Heritage Studies;
  • Providing input on the curriculum and new course development to ensure the delivery of quality programs;
  • Participating in course and program assessment activities;
  • Other academic duties customarily performed by full-time or regular part-time faculty, including participating on committees or in other academic service.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Assisting in reviewing and approving prospect admission materials;
  • Planning onsite and remote events and/or seminars & field courses;
  • Mentoring and evaluating adjunct faculty in their pedagogy and professional development;
  • Assisting with program communication, promotion and outreach, engagement, expansion, and coordination of the program’s social media networks, podcasts, and events;
  • Assisting the Program Director with administrative tasks;
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Museum Studies or Heritage-related field;
  • 5 years of online and/or graduate-level teaching experience;
  • 2-3 years of professional work experience outside of academia within the Museum and Heritage field;
  • Ability to teach various Museum and Heritage Studies courses, including at least two existing Museum Studies courses and two existing Cultural Heritage Management courses;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree in Museum Studies or Heritage-related field.
  • 6 or more years of online and/or graduate-level teaching experience;
  • 4 or more years of professional work experience outside of academia within the Museum and Heritage field;
  • Expertise with various social media tools, enthusiasm for researching and learning about emerging technologies, and familiarity with learning management systems (such as Canvas).

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
