The Central Office of Alumni Relations serves the more than 240,000 alumni of the Johns Hopkins University. The Office of Alumni Relations (OAR) is currently located in the San Martin Center on the Homewood Campus and this position is part of the greater OAR team that includes 25 staff members working in different facets of alumni engagement.

The Identity and Shared Interest Affinity Program works collaboratively with colleagues across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine to bring together alumni, students, and friends of the university to build community around shared interests and experiences. These communities encompass all divisions, graduating classes, and are open to the full Hopkins family; reflecting a broad diversity of concerns and activities. The team consists of three individuals working with approximately 8 volunteer-driven groups of varying size and focus. Established in 2011, the Affinity Engagement Program originally included both identity, shared interest, and industry focused communities (Law, Finance, and Biotech, etc.). In order to create better alignment for our internal work, the Identity and Shared Interest groups have branched off from the previously known Affinity Engagement Program.

This newly and more narrowly focused program area of Interest and Identity-based communities, is currently poised for another period of rapid growth since 2011 and the Office of Alumni Relations is building out the team to continue to support, broaden and further grow the current work of these groups.

Role Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director will manage multiple and varied responsibilities in a high paced environment, and will deliver a high-level of customer service to internal and external constituents. Under the direction of the Senior Associate Director, the Assistant Director for Identity and Shared Interest Groups is an integral part of the growing team. This individual will work closely with multiple volunteer committees, including the direct responsibilities of:

  • Identification, recruitment, training, stewardship, and recognition of alumni volunteers
  • Managing and leading committee meetings and meeting follow up
  • Coordinating the logistical details and supporting group events and activities (virtual and in person) Collaboration with a variety of internal departments, divisions and colleagues to provide inclusive opportunities to engage alumni and current students through activities and programs—including the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Divisional partners, department partners and Integrated Learning and Life Design to name a few Communicating and scheduling program information (with internal and external audiences) Developing promotional materials and partnering with the OAR Communications Specialist to develop effective marketing campaigns Engaging with student groups and organizations for support of their efforts, potential programs, and collaboration Assisting with the development and implementation of Intersession Programs in January annually Assisting with onboarding and new group development Assisting with volunteer coding in the constituent database as needed

In addition to volunteer and event management the Assistant Director will also oversee the logistics of the annual Women’s Leadership Conference held in March in Washington, DC. Serving as the main contact to the venue and vendors, as well as managing portions of the organization of the conference.

They will also assist in managing similar details for the annual Black Alumni Weekend held in September and the annual programs held during Reunion/Homecoming Weekend in the spring.


Excellent project management, organizational and communication skills are necessary. Regular nights and weekends required along with some travel per COVID protocols.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years relevant experience
Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the ability to:

  • Manage multiple projects with critical attention to detail.
  • Both manage and speak at events in a calm and professional manner.
  • Oversee the set-up of events including the management of vendors and troubleshooting of barriers to success.
  • Collaborate on marketing and promotional pieces to include the gathering of stories for magazine and web content and writing and design of web pages and event invitations.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Development and Alumni Relations database system known as ALADIN; specifically running queries and reports.
  • Develop a proficient understanding of the Relationship Management module and add meaningful data to alumni profiles.
  • Assist with staffing other office-wide events, Alumni Leadership Weekend, Homecoming/Reunion and Young Alumni Weekend activities as necessary.
  • Execute other special projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor.

The successful candidate must have the ability to travel both locally and across the country as applicable.

The successful candidate must be able to utilize computers for word processing, mail merging, maintaining lists, updating database records, and producing various reports.
