Calvin University invites applications for the Director of the Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity. The Nagel Institute supports research and programs that foster the study of World Christianity and strengthen Christian intellectual and cultural movements worldwide.

The director is a senior professional with a significant record of achievement in scholarship and programming in the study of World Christianity. The director is the critical force for envisaging, funding, developing, promoting, and executing the institute’s scholarly initiatives and programs on issues of World Christianity.

Further Director responsibilities include promoting broad, interdisciplinary faculty participation in external networks devoted to World Christianity, educating the Calvin University community on World Christianity, and expanding the institute’s reach by building programs that enrich student learning experiences. Some travel is expected.

The Director devotes a full-time workload to the operation of the Nagel Institute. It is desirable that the director will hold faculty status and be affiliated with an academic department of Calvin University. Possible teaching assignments and other departmental duties have yet to be negotiated.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Promote, generate, and encourage new scholarly initiatives on issues of World Christianity.
  • Promote faculty participation in external networks devoted to World Christianity.
  • Strategically align the work of the institute with the learning experiences of Calvin University undergraduate students.
  • Oversee external communication links, including a web presence devoted to issues of World Christianity.
  • Oversee the budget of the institute.
  • Ensure efficient and effective completion of Institute projects.
  • Take principal responsibility for writing grant proposals and obtaining external funding in collaboration with Calvin’s Office of Advancement.
  • Serve as chief liaison between the Nagel Institute and its advisory council.

Required Experience

The position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent, five to ten years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A distinguished record of publication, teaching, and service is expected. The Director must have a vision for the Nagel Institute and its potential programming, a passion for matters related to World Christianity, experience in generating project funding, and an aptitude for managing staff.
