UW Bothell has an outstanding opportunity for a Front End Web Developer.

The front-end developer plays a key role in shaping the UW Bothell website. The role leads code implementation as well as website strategy and governance from a technical perspective in AER’s Office of Marketing and Communications. The person also collaborates closely with IT’s front-end developer and other staff to ensure consistency and security in technical implementation of code, website strategy and governance across teams.

The front-end developer will work within AER’s marcomm team, a dynamic group dedicated to creating a quality online user experience for UW Bothell’s prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and the rest of the campus community and external stakeholders. The University’s audiences are diverse and to reach these audiences, an accessible, secure, mobile-friendly and ever-evolving website is of critical importance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Produce, maintain and revise core website templates

• Produce responsive, robust website templates from graphic mock-ups provided by the UX designer through advanced use of current web programming technologies as applied to our multisite WordPress environment.
• Ensure templates conform to University security and accessibility standards, as well as University brand standards.
• Develop an enhanced online user experience (UX) by creating interactive dynamic webpages.
• Perform cross-browser testing on new templates.
• Troubleshoot bugs that emerge on UW Bothell’s suite of websites related to stylesheets, WordPress updates, etc.
• Works collaboratively with the marcomm’s UX Designer and IT’s front-end web developer to provide seamless integration of the campus website UX and CMS in keeping with institutional and industry best practices and standards.

Produce, integrate, maintain and revise website features and functionality

• Design and implement new responsive features, integrations and functionality, including plugins, for UW Bothell’s suite of WordPress websites.
• Perform cross-browser testing on new CMS features, plugins, integrations, etc.
• Ensure features, plug-ins and integrations conform to University security and accessibility standards, as well as University brand standards, working with IT partners.
• Integrate third-party APIs into the UW Bothell website such as Google Maps, Google analytics, Google tag manager, Marketo, Trumba and others.
• Optimize data that feeds information to search engines, such as Google, to ensure that UW Bothell’s website appears in relevant search results.
• As required, produce foundational Javascript libraries to build a framework and toolset to routinely offer new features in a controlled way that web producers can easily use.

General support for enhancing admin user experience for web editors and the WordPress CMS:

• Help manage and enhance UW Bothell’s multisite WordPress instance
• In collaboration with staff in marcomm and IT, develop tools within CMS to enhance ability of web editors and publishers to access and use the features they have access to in the UW Bothell WordPress CMS

Provide technical support and troubleshooting on a day-to-day and emergency basis

• Be available for on-call emergency response duties as needed

Other duties as assigned

• Examples: Assist in online marketing projects, producing or reviewing coding needed for ad tracking and email campaigns. Participate in the UW-wide Web Council, UW Bothell Website Development Committee and UW Bothell Communications Council.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and at least 2-3 years of experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Demonstrates intermediate to advanced skill in front-end web technologies, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery and popular CSS frameworks such as Bootstrap in the multisite WordPress environment
• Demonstrates intermediate knowledge and practice of current best practices for CSS development, such as SASS, LESS, grid, flex, etc.
• Demonstrates intermediate to advanced knowledge and practice of designing and developing fully responsive websites
• Experience implementing front-end technologies in the context of the Gutenberg Block Editor editorial experience
• Experience integrating WordPress plugins and other applications into existing WordPress web properties — and creating custom plugins and features
• Experience working with data tracking and marketing APIs such as Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ad Words
• Experience integrating SEO principles in WordPress websites
• Experience developing and troubleshooting websites that work across browsers and devices
• Ability to understand CSS changes and their ramifications to ensure consistent style across platforms and browsers
• Ability to convert comprehensive layout, wireframes and protoytpes into working HTML pages and functional WordPress features
• Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as GIT
• Familiarity with creating accessible websites from the code up, such as semantic HTML5, and familiarity with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• A collaborative mindset that values maintaining good working relationships with direct team members and stakeholders
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

DESIRED:

• Experience building custom WordPress plugins, features and functionality
• Training and/or certification in web accessibility
• Training and/or certification in search engine optimization
• Four to five years of experience in front-end website development
