The Position: MCGS is searching for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies to start August 2022. California State University, Chico is seeking faculty who are current in their field, excellent teachers, collaborative with colleagues and staff in program development, and committed to student success.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D. (discipline open), with a strong research and/or teaching focus in American Indian Studies. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be completed prior to the beginning of the academic year (August 17, 2022). Additionally, candidates must document (1) a strong focus on issues in contemporary Native American/American Indian tribes and/or communities; (2) evidence of cultural knowledge of and experience with American Indian people and tribes; (3) proven excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; (4) demonstrated oral and written communication skills; AND (5) potential for, and commitment to, professional activities and growth. The successful candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference for knowledge of and/or established relationships (or strong potential for establishing relationships) with tribes in Northern California, especially the Mechoopda and/or Maidu; conversational abilities in one or more tribal languages; prior experience teaching with an intersectional lens and student-centered pedagogy; and experience in interdisciplinary teaching, curriculum development, program development, and/or student outreach and retention. Bilingual candidates will be given preference.

Responsibilities:

Pursuing research and/or creative activities; teaching a variety of courses in American Indian Studies as well as in Multicultural & Gender Studies (including General Education) through an intersectional lens; and service within and outside of MCGS. The successful candidate will work with other colleagues to build enrollment in our intersectional American Indian Studies program and otherwise move toward our Strategic Vision. The faculty member would lead revision of core AIST curriculum to include a majority of Native American-authored texts; as well as develop new courses, including (1) American Indian Sovereignty, Federal Indian Law, and Politics and (2) Native American Tribal Governance: Economic Development, Culture, Housing, Health and Education, among others.
