The Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health has a mission to work in partnership with Indigenous people to raise their health status and self-sufficiency to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) research, 2) service, and 3) training. This position works together with the Center’s Southwest U.S. and Baltimore-based research teams to assist in the development, coordination and delivery of field-based public health services.

The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families and communities. Responsible for overseeing quantitative and qualitative data management, maintenance, and monitoring in collaboration with tribal community partners, interviewers, and study investigators.

The Iiná ’Ayoo’oo’ni’: Embrace Life Project, a Zero Suicide Initiative, aims to develop a comprehensive and sustainable suicide prevention and treatment system with evidence-based practices and culturally-informed interventions within the Chinle Service Unit (CSU), Navajo Area Indian Health Service (IHS). The primary goals of this project at CSU include:

  • Establishing suicide prevention as a core component of health care services
  • Improve suicide screenings in primary care, urgent care, behavioral health, emergency services
  • Ensure behavioral health specialists are trained in assessing, treating, and creating a safety plan for those at risk for suicide
  • Train community members in recognizing and intervening when interacting with anyone at potential risk for suicide
  • Collaborate with community partners and first responders to establish a crisis response team to help coordinate postvention services
  • Establish continuity of care for at risk patients through all transitions of care
  • Establish a clear suicide surveillance system that can be used effectively to collect accurate suicide data

We are seeking a Research Assistant who will be fulfilling responsibilities related to the second aim of the Iiná ’Ayoo’oo’ni’: Embrace Life Project, a Zero Suicide Initiative which is to improve suicide screenings in primary care, urgent care, behavioral health, emergency services.

The Research Assistant will work extensively to validate the Ask Suicide Screening Questions (ASQ) which has been adapted for the Navajo context. The Research Assistant will work collaboratively with a number of key stakeholders including the Chinle Service Unit, National Institutes of Health and other clinicians and researchers. The primary goal of this position is to conduct a validation study of the ASQ for the Navajo context.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Activities include:

    Plan for and maintain project timelines for the ASQ validation study. Support the application process for all relevant IRBs. Conduct and manage data collection for the ASQ validation study. Establish and maintain partnerships with local organizations and community members (including, but not limited to, hospitals, schools, government agencies and officials). Liaise, plan and attend meetings, and carry out relevant activities with key stakeholders including IHS, Johns Hopkins, and the National Institutes of Health. Report findings to relevant stakeholders and work with them to interpret findings in the context of future suicide prevention interventions. Help provide annual reports to key Navajo Nation leadership and stakeholders. Help disseminate tribally approved findings through annual reports, at national conferences and in the scientific literature.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    Bachelor’s Degree. Some related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Ability to take direction and respond positively to feedback in the workplace.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to travel as needed, including overnight trips for extended periods of time.
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence with a good driving record.
  • Some flexibility is required to ensure that evening and weekend work is completed for some projects.
  • This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies.

    Ability to travel as needed, including overnight trips.
