The Howard County General Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an affiliate of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is seeking a full-time Senior Nurse Practitioner (NP). This independent health care provider will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive care to both well and ill patients/participants. The NP educates patients/participants and/or their families in order to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute or chronic illness.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Will be responsible for evaluation and treatment of the ill and convalescing neonate in conjunction with the attending neonatologist. Will conduct comprehensive health assessments on infants who may require critical care services and will help develop plans of care for patients who have potential or realized health issues.
  • Performs patient history and physical examinations of acute and critically ill neonates as well as subacute and convalescing infants in NICU
  • Completes and maintains appropriate clinical forms/records relating to the history, physical assessment, and clinical care of patients in the NICU.
  • Will be able to prepare daily reviews of patients for report to the attending neonatologist and nursing staff during morning rounds.
  • Establishes appropriate medical diagnoses for acute or chronic health problems
  • Orders and performs lab tests and procedures relevant to the patient’s diagnoses and treatment
  • Interprets the results of diagnostic and laboratory tests in order to prescribe and/or adjust pharmacologic agents and/or treatment plans
  • Performs routine high-risk neonatal procedures as detailed in the Delineation of Privileges document, to include but not limited to: endotracheal intubation, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, umbilical vein and umbilical artery catheterizations, lumbar punctures, venipuncture, arterial puncture, peripheral arterial line placement, percutaneous central venous catheter placement, suprapubic urine aspiration
  • Completion of on-line training (through Johns Hopkins myLearning) will be required prior to performance of percutaneous central venous catheter placement
  • Review of performance and documentation of all procedures while employed at Howard County General Hospital may be required as a component of Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (F-PPE)
  • Attends high risk deliveries and performs neonatal resuscitation as needed, to include routine stabilization, use of bag-mask/t-piece resuscitators/ETT positive pressure ventilation, endotracheal intubation, umbilical vein catheterization, and ordering and administration of resuscitation medications and IV fluids, in accordance with current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) standards.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans, consistent with current health care knowledge, research, and evidence-based clinical practice
  • Prescribes pharmacologic agents appropriate to the patient/participant, in appropriate doses and routes for individual patients/participants
  • Prescribes controlled medications. This privilege requires proof of current Maryland CDS and federal DEA registrations prior to the exercise of this privilege
  • Participates in daily rounds plus regular review and discussion of the patient/participant’s health problems, medications, and treatment plan(s) with the Attending Physician, and communicates and explains plans to other members of the multidisciplinary team as needed
  • Updates family members as to the baby’s condition and treatment plan regularly and as needed
  • Performs treatments and/or procedures as indicated
  • Documents accurately, expediently and consistently with care provided
  • Appropriately orders consults and/or provides referrals to additional providers or outside services with attention to patient’s medical and social needs
  • Maintains and updates own ability to provide patient/participant education
  • Develops and/or implements formal or informal methods to educate and counsel participants, family, staff and/or colleagues
  • Updates knowledge of current and new medications and/or therapies by reading journals, and attending continuing education/conferences/in-house lectures
  • Acts in role of mentor and/or consultant to nurses, students and other health care professionals
  • Serves as an effective member of the clinical team, contributing to and assuring patient safety and efficient operation of the unit. Promotes effective relationships and communication with all hospital personnel as part of the hospital’s commitment to service excellence, quality patient care.
  • Participates with the physician staff in the professional fee billing for services conducted in the Intensive Care Nursery
  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives in a multidisciplinary fashion.

Schedule:

Rotating - Days, Nights, and Weekends

Day shifts will be 9 hours (8am -5pm) and night shifts will be 15 hours (5pm - 8am). Weekend hours will vary with shorter shifts.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master's Degree in Nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing
  • Requires minimum of 3 years’ experience in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty; 5 years’ experience or more preferred. Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience
  • Current NRP certification required
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification for duration of employment
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years or more experience in related clinical area preferred

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing or a closely related field
  • Current Maryland state licensure as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner is required.
  • Analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems and/or design relatively complex systems and programs that cross department/divisional lines
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment
