Summary/Objective

The Community Director is a live-in position and co-manages all aspects of a co-educational residence hall and learning community housing approximately 600-1200 students. This position directly oversees the day-to-day operation of a residential area including: supervising student assistants, conflict mediation, hall initiatives/activities and facilities operation. The incumbent provides judicial services as a hearing officer in violations of the Student Code of Conduct regarding the housing policies and helps enforce these policies. This position provides on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population. The Community Director also serves as an advisor to the Hall Council in the assigned area and presents educational programming for residents as needed.

Essential Functions

1. Staff Supervision, Selection, and Training: Select, train, and supervise student staff to provide an environment conducive to living and learning. To meet these goals, this position requires the individual to meet with staff members individually and as a group to discuss their performance, the residents and issues affecting the area. This also includes supervising staff programming, conflict mediation, and evaluation of student staff performance. Furthermore, this position plays an integral part in the selection of qualified staff, as well as provides a comprehensive training program in the fall and spring semesters for student staff positions throughout the department.
2. Judicial Administration: Ensure that policies are uniformly and fairly enforced. Read and access staff reports on alleged violations of the student code of conduct (Incident Report Forms or IRFs). Provide services as a hearing officer in violations of the Student Code of Conduct regarding the housing policies. Prepare and present in cases involving a Disciplinary Hearing Board. Prepare all paperwork and reports that detail the judicial system within the residence halls.
3. On-Call Emergency Response/After Hours Responsibility: Provide on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population. Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other university departments. Provide assistance with after hours and weekend room assignment, staff selection, and staff training programs.
4. Educational Programming: Interpret and apply a programming framework utilizing Housing & Dining Programs programming model. Collaborate with university faculty and other departments within the Office of Campus Life and Academic Affairs. Create and present programs on topics identified as residents’ most immediate needs and interests.
5. Residential Desk Operations: Oversee day to day operations for the residential community desk during the academic year. Recruit, hire and supervise desk coordinator and desk receptionists. Assist in the implementation and training for student staff during fall and winter training programs.

Required Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in student personnel administration or related field
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience
Preferred Education and Experience
  • One year of professional residence hall supervision/management experience, residential curriculum development, living learning communities, and/or advising student groups is preferred. Supervision of student employees and/or graduate assistants preferred.
  • Previous experience managing student crises and conflicts preferred.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • On-campus living and availability for after-hour and weekend response is required.
  • This position has “non-traditional” business hours. Extreme flexibility is required to be successful in this position.
  • Attendance at campus functions, student programs, and after-hours emergency response is often required.
  • The staff member should have an active interest in the development of students in their personal and academic pursuits.
