Job Summary

The Florida Gulf Coast University Library is hiring a Data Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Research and Instruction, the successful candidate builds relationships with faculty, staff, and students to promote data literacy and develop strategies to meet emerging needs. They will collaborate with others in the University Library, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Lucas Center for Faculty Development, and others across campus to effectively communicate services available to FGCU researchers and keep the university community informed about policies and activities related to research data management and funder/publisher requirements. They will provide outreach events and educational instruction, consultations, and workshops to the university community both in-person and online.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Provides leadership and management for the FGCU Library’s research data services and collections.
  • Builds relationships with faculty, staff, and students, promotes data literacy, and develops strategies to meet existing and emerging needs.
  • Collaborates within the University Library, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and other campus partners to build awareness around research data management best practices and data services offered to Florida Gulf Coast University researchers including research data management, funder/publisher requirements, and open research initiatives.
  • Provides outreach events and educational instruction, consultations, and workshops to the university community both in-person and online.
  • Provides consultative and educational services to researchers and faculty about data management plans, data sharing platforms and funder requirements for datasets.
  • Partners with University Library Subject Librarians for outreach to university faculty and departments.
  • Coordinates with Scholarly Communications Librarian on repository support and maintenance of data preservation.
  • Participate in professional associations, workshops, conferences, and meetings, and contribute to the advancement of the profession
Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Two years of experience in research data management, data coordination, or academic research.
  • Knowledge of data services concepts, such as: development of research data plans, research data repositories, data curation, data publishing, data visualization, open data, and data literacy.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member.
  • Strong commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse range of constituents with varying levels of knowledge and experience, including faculty, librarians, and students in a variety of disciplines.
  • Knowledge of data storage and sharing systems.
  • Experience developing and delivering training or workshop presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional advanced degree in data science, computer science or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated understanding of metadata standards within the context of research data management.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of copyright and permissions issues, including open access publishing
  • Knowledge of the role of the institutional repository in the academic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects, and services, working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of digital library standards, technologies, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with major descriptive metadata standards (METS and MODS).
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with aptitude for and evidence of complex analytical and detailed work, and commitment to quality assurance and control.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Experience or commitment to the use of technology in distance learning & university teaching. Strong interest in collaborating both within and outside the university to develop key partnerships. Ability to develop, deliver and assess instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value and engage in continued scholarship, and service to the university, community, and librarianship.

Appointment will be made on 12-month multi- year appointment basis available July 2022.
