The salary range for this position is $45,300– $56,500. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Organizations and Leadership Programs within the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion ( CMEI ), the Assistant Director of the CMEI, Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Government is a creative and passionate student affairs professional who operates from a lens of understanding and prioritizing equity in working with MSU Denver’s diverse students. The Assistant Director has a focus on supporting student leaders who are members of the MSU Denver Fraternity and Sorority Life ( FSL ) community, as well as the Student Government but is involved in student engagement work across the CMEI, Student Engagement & Wellness, and the Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director is a strategic and student-centered thinker and planner who is also adept at developing effective professional relationships with individuals and departments. Note: While this position has focus areas, as outlined in this job description, the successful individual will be an adaptable student engagement generalist who is adept at pivoting to contribute to different program areas and initiatives, as needed.

The Assistant Director is responsible for active advisement of the student government elected leaders. Additionally, the Assistant Director works closely with other leaders within student affairs to formally support and advise student government leaders and other student government members. The Assistant Director provides strategic support for student government leaders while designing, implementing, and assessing one-, three-, and five- year strategic priorities and plans. With their co-advisor, the Assistant Director helps student government leadership set applicable goals, facilitates leadership and team building, and equips elected leaders effectively carry out their responsibilities as the representative governance organization of MSU Denver’s diverse student body.

Additionally, the Assistant Director is responsible for cultivating a robust, inclusive, values-based, and safe fraternity and sorority life community at the MSU Denver. The Assistant Director accomplishes these objectives by providing strategic supervision and direction to one graduate assistant for leadership and FSL and student employees. Further, the Assistant Director is responsible for strategic expansion as it relates to diverse fraternities and sororities. To this end, the Assistant Director engages in community building, risk management, and leadership development work with existing fraternity and sorority members and is also responsible for coordinating the relationships with national/international Greek letter organizations and umbrella entities (National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, Inc., National Multicultural Greek Council, National Panhellenic Conference, National Pan-Hellenic Council, North American Interfraternity Conference, National Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Panhellenic Association, etc.).

Duties/Responsibilities

40%- Student Government Advising
  • Manage compliance with all applicable Colorado state statutes laws, MSU Denver policies, and governing documents.
  • Plan and execute student government elections policies, procedures, and implementation through the supervision of the election services team.
  • Oversee proximately $130,000 in student fee funded budget while implementing appropriate fiscal controls.
  • Design and implement appropriate assessments to evaluate the efficacy of student fee supported student government initiatives.
  • Coaches, mentors, and supports the student leaders through regular weekly meetings, frequent individual and group interactions.
  • Cultivate and strengthen open lines of communication and dialogue between student leaders and MSU Denver faculty and staff leadership.
  • Advise and support student government and succession planning.
  • As advisor to student government, manage and coordinate all human resources functions associated with the pay for student government members.
40% – Fraternity and Sorority Life ( FSL ) Advising
  • As the primary point of contact for all fraternity and sorority matters at the MSU Denver, provide direction, coaching, and development for FSL community members and their respective governing councils.
  • Work with and educate council and chapter leaders, advisory board, local advisers, national/international organizations, and applicable MSU Denver departments in providing a robust infrastructure design to support the MSU Denver FSL community.
  • Regularly attend fraternity and sorority meetings workshops and programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to national/international affiliated fraternity and sorority headquarters and professional staff including meeting and communicating with traveling leadership and chapter consultants.
  • Continually evaluate, draft and implement best practices in fraternity and sorority risk management.
  • Design and implement comprehensive FSL co-curriculum and at new member recruitment, ongoing member education, and promoting responsible membership and effective chapter management.
  • Advise all social, service, professional, and honorary organizations with selective/competitive membership intake processes.
  • Work to develop effective partnerships with national/international organizations and their headquarters to diversify FSL opportunities available to the MSU Denver community.
  • Coordinate the FSL recognition and annual accreditation program which includes chapter self-assessment, data collection, and regular chapter check-ins.
  • Manage, and implement a budget funded through student fee appropriations to FSL while ensuring fiscal responsibility, effective planning, and effective use of resources in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and university policies in specific procedures.
  • Represent and/or lead department on content-specific division wide committees.
  • When funding permits accompany FSL student leadership to appropriate professional and regional conferences (Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values West and or Central, Panhellenic Academy, etc.).
10%- Supervision and Operations
  • Manage operations for FSL & Student Government programs focusing on potential new member education, leadership development, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion while working closely with the assistant director of equity and student leadership to implement a comprehensive FSL leadership development curriculum.
  • Supervise three Fraternity/Sorority Life Student Coordinators student employees who support program operations. Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and hold student employees accountable to performance expectations.
  • Participate in annual budget process to request funding through the student affairs board ( SAB ), which provides fees for programs. Support SGA in the same process for the designated SGA budget. Prepare collateral materials to make a compelling case for ongoing funding of programs/operations.


10%- Assessments & Planning
  • Regularly track student participation, assess student learning, and manage data for program areas above, and in other areas related to student engagement, as requested.
  • Contribute to strategic planning including playing a leadership role in thoughtful skilled future planning for SGA and FSL .
  • Regularly communicates (and reports) on student participation and outcomes; does so with disaggregated information on relevant student demographic characteristics including race and ethnicity.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working with underrepresented students specifically, low-income, first-generation, and racially/ethnically diverse.
  • One year of experience in providing administrative, managerial, and programming oversight for fraternity/sorority communities, chapters, or councils or a related field.
  • Knowledge of issues, trends, policies, and best practices relevant to student government.
  • Experience working with student leaders in a college/university setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned Master’s Degree in higher education administration, student affairs, education leadership, counseling, social work, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing positively to campus-wide equity and social justice outcomes.
  • Four years or more experience in providing administrative and managerial oversight for university programming or student engagement, or equivalent operations.
  • Four years or more experience advising fraternity/sorority communities, chapters, governing boards and inter/national boards.
  • Experience developing and implementing program-wide or department-wide assessment plans for improvement.
  • Membership in a National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, Inc., National Multicultural Greek Council, National Panhellenic Conference, National Pan-Hellenic Council, North American Interfraternity Conference, National Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Panhellenic Association, or related member organization.
  • Solid foundation in student development theory and student learning theory, as well as their application to professional practice in higher education and student affairs.
Work Hours

Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm. Some evenings and weekends required.
