The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) School of Dentistry invites applications for Assistant or Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, a full-time, senior-level tenure-track faculty position. In FY2020, UMB received more than $688 million in awards from both for-profit and non-profit sponsors, including $623 million from federal, state, and other non-profit grants and contracts. The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) ranked 4th in overall NIH funding in FY2020. UMB offers 15 research and scholarship doctorate programs and 24 master’s degree programs. In addition to professional practice programs, UMSOD offers doctorate (PhD) programs in Dental Biomedical Sciences and Oral and Experimental Pathology and a master’s program (MS) in Dental Biomedical Sciences.

As a member of the UMSOD executive leadership team, the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies is responsible for advancing programmatic research goals, efforts, and initiatives, including strategic planning, assisting with recruitment and retention of research faculty and staff, mentoring and advising, and overseeing compliance with research policies and procedures . This role includes fostering a more diverse and inclusive research workforce and environment. To this end, the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies collaborates with the Dean in developing and advancing research, innovation, and discovery, including intellectual property, as well as research training and graduate programs (MS and PhD). The Dean of Research and Graduate Studies works closely with the administration, faculty, and broader University of Maryland community to support and advance the research and academic programs at UMSOD.

Responsibilities
  • Overseeing basic, clinical, and translational research programs
  • Strategic planning for research and graduate research studies
  • Overseeing the review of all research grant applications regarding resource utilization and regulatory compliance
  • Facilitating and coordinating access to shared research resources
  • Serving as a liaison to the UMB Graduate School, and the Office of Research and Development
  • Facilitating technology transfer initiatives, including patents, copyrights, and licensing agreements
  • Serving as liaison with external sponsors, including federal and state regulatory agencies, federal funding and local agencies, private foundations and public charities, and industry sponsors
  • Managing regulatory/compliance issues including scientific conflict of interest, fraud and misconduct
  • Identifying external funding opportunities for support of research and infrastructure activities
  • Promoting extramurally funded interdisciplinary research programs
  • Evaluating research space use, long-term planning, anticipated space needs and accommodation of acute and unexpected space requirements.
Qualifications :

The successful candidate should hold a DDS/DMD/MD and/or PhD with a history of leadership, strong and consistent record of research funding and productivity in scientific areas advancing fundamental and/or translational knowledge in dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease.
