The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, invites applicants for a tenure-track position in the Department of Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall 2022. Located in beautiful and historic Charleston, S.C., The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of about 2300 undergraduate students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and another 1000 students who attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening and online program that offers graduate and professional degrees as well as undergraduate programs. For the past ten years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked The Citadel as the top public college in the South among masters granting institutions.

One of seven departments in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, the Department of Chemistry offers an ACS accredited Bachelor of Science degree with an option to obtain a Biochemistry concentration. Additionally, the department offers a Bachelor of Art degree with options to obtain Environmental Chemistry and Clinical Chemistry concentrations. The Citadel supports faculty research, professional development, and travel through internal funding. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive. The contract is a full-time, 9-month tenure-track position.



Job Responsibilities

The primary teaching responsibility of the successful candidate will be organic chemistry and organic chemistry labs with the possibility of teaching upper level courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise as well as general chemistry for STEM majors. A normal teaching load is twelve credit hours per week with small class sizes (The Citadel’s student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1). Other responsibilities include mentoring students through advising and undergraduate research, participating in curriculum revision, creating new courses, outreach and faculty governance. The candidate is expected to achieve and maintain scholarly productivity consistent with departmental and college-wide policy for tenure and promotion.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate by the time of appointment from an accredited institution in organic chemistry or a closely-related field of study.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior teaching experience and the ability to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate instruction; evidence of mentoring and engaging undergraduates in research; experience in either natural products chemistry, green chemistry polymer chemistry bio-organic chemistry and/or clinical chemistry.
