Position Details

Wesleyan University’s Department of Chemistry invites applications for a one-year, part-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry beginning September 1, 2022. The visitor will be responsible for four sections (two each semester) of the sophomore-level laboratory courses: Intermediate Chemistry Laboratory ( CHEM 257) during the Fall Semester and Organic Chemistry Laboratory ( CHEM 258) during the Spring Semester. While the curriculum and administration of these courses will be managed by full-time faculty, the instructor of these sections will be expected to engage actively and independently with their students to facilitate learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of instruction, compliance with safety protocols, management of assigned teaching assistants, the proper stewardship of the laboratory spaces, and the prompt evaluation and return of student work. Frequent communication with the lead instructor and at least one office hour per week are expected. Scheduling will be flexible, with some evening options available. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college, with a strong and diverse undergraduate student body, that values both scholarship and teaching very highly.
Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment.
Special Instructions To Applicants

A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and documentation of teaching experience, including a teaching statement, course syllabi, and student evaluations. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation.

The instructional/teaching duties are in person, online and/or remotely (or any combination thereof), and at the University’s sole discretion and based on the existing needs of the University. Wesleyan expects to be fully in person in academic year 2022-2023 and will require all faculty, staff, and students to provide proof of vaccination against Covid19 and to receive a booster shot within 30 days of becoming eligible (or have an exemption request approved by Human Resources).
