The Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health is a unique and collaborative Johns Hopkins academic program conducted jointly by the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing. It is hosted at and administered by the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and draws upon a variety of disciplines, including epidemiology, demography, emergency and disaster medicine, health systems management, nutrition/food security, environmental engineering, mental health, political science and human rights. The Center collaborates with a variety of organizations including national and international non-governmental organizations, multilateral and UN organizations, and Governmental agencies, as well as other research institutions on field-based research and humanitarian projects.

The Center’s vision is to pursue new knowledge and disseminate this learning to save lives and reduce human suffering and other consequences of humanitarian emergencies and disasters (http://www.hopkinshumanitarianhealth.org/).

Position:

The Center seeks a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant Scientist (non-professorial track) to support the Center’s reproductive, maternal and newborn health research portfolio. This position will be a key member of the Ensuring Quality Access and Learning (EQUAL) for Mothers and Newborns in Conflict-Affected Contexts Consortium, a research consortium funded through the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ‘Filling the Gaps in Evidence: Building Stronger and More Resilient Health Systems Research Programme Consortia mechanism. The consortium is led by the International Rescue Committee in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health, Somalia Research and Development Institute, Institute of Human Virology Nigeria, and Université Catholique de Bukavu (DRC).

The objective of this project is to produce rigorous, operationally relevant research and evidence to improve maternal and neonatal health in low-income, conflict-affected contexts. Specifically, the Center is working with partners to advance research on quality of care, maternal and perinatal mortality surveillance and midwifery workforce development .

The Assistant Scientist will work independently, in close collaboration with the Center’s Director, JHU technical lead for EQUAL, and consortium partners.

Scope of Work:
  • Co-lead research in at least one thematic area, and contribute to others
  • Develop resources and facilitate technical updates to ensure consortium members with varied areas of expertise have a common understanding of current global standards, frameworks, guidelines and initiatives in maternal and newborn health
  • Co-lead and/or contribute to development and implementation of research study protocols, ensuring consideration of emerging evidence and global best practices in maternal and newborn health research
  • Co-lead development of data collection tools and analysis plans, in collaboration with consortium partners
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with JHU and in-country ethical board regulations, as well as subject and context-specific best practices
  • Support consortium members to develop and implement robust context-appropriate systems for data collection, quality assurance, and management
  • Contribute to training of study team members and data collectors on maternal and newborn health, measurement methods and research SOPs
  • Provide technical assistance and mentorship in areas of expertise
  • Supervise student research assistants as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD/DrPH or Medical/Nursing Doctorate with MPH in international health or related field
  • Previous operational, programmatic and/or research experience in maternal and newborn health
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience in humanitarian or fragile settings
  • Experience conducting household surveys, health facility assessments, ethnographic, or community-based participatory research in low-income countries
  • Strong quantitative and/or qualitative analysis skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with teams across multiple locations and with varied areas of technical expertise
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
Assets:
  • Peer-reviewed publications on related subjects
  • Clinical experience in nursing/midwifery, obstetrics, neonatology or pediatrics
  • Fluency in French

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
