LGBT History Collections Librarian - (LIB000062)

The University of Houston Libraries seeks an LGBT History Research Collections Librarian to build upon our national reputation for distinctive collections, student success, and scholarly inquiry in LGBT Studies and Queer Studies. UH Libraries has one of the most extensive LGBT archival collections in the country, and has significant collaborative partnerships with LGBT community archivists and archives, and other area academic collections. The UH campus boasts an active Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies program, and an engaged LGBTQ Resource Center, faculty, student, and alumni organizations.

Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the LGBT History Research Collections Librarian will manage all aspects of LGBT archives, rare books, serials collection development, and collection care and management, including arranging and describing materials, authoring finding aid inventories, and creating processing plans. There also will be opportunities to collaborate on identifying and preparing materials for digitization in accordance with preservation procedures for archives and library materials.

The successful candidate will engage the large and active LGBTQ community on campus and in the Houston area through instruction, outreach, and community partnerships, including collaborating with faculty to provide primary source information literacy instruction; providing reference and research consultations; and leading outreach activities with LGBTQ organizations and community leaders and being active in exhibits and social media.

Salary: $65,000 to 67,000 expected hiring range, depending on qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement programs; tax-deferred annuity program available; release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income tax.

Qualifications :

Required:

• Master’s degree from ALA-accredited program
• Training and experience in archival processing and description of complex archival collections
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in and out of the Libraries
• Demonstrated commitment to building a diverse and inclusive organization

Preferred:

• Knowledge of descriptive metadata standards including MARC, DACS, and data structure standards relevant to archival control of collection materials including EAD
• Knowledge of and experience working with historical LGBT collections and rare books and serials holdings
• Familiarity or experience with archives collection management tools such as ArchivesSpace
• Experience with multiple levels of archival processing, including detailed item-level and More Product Less Process (MPLP) practices
• Experience with community outreach, partnerships, and the post custodial model of archival participation among community members
• Knowledge and experience with instruction and facilitating discussion in a collaborative/group setting
• Knowledge and experience with digitization and digital projects
